A Long Walk to Water by MrB17

“A soldier approached Salva and raised his gun. Salva froze. All he could see was the gun’s huge barrel, black and gleaming, as it moved toward his face.”
Thinking About the Story...
- What comfort does Salva take from advice he remembers hearing from his father?

- What is your opinion of the way the rebels treats Salva and the rest of the people? Be thoughtful. This is not as simple a question as it might appear to be.

- At the end of the chapter Salva finds that he has been left alone. What choices do you think he has at the end of Chapter Two? What choice might you make if you found yourself in a similar situation?

Salva tried to follow his father advice I thought he felt comfortable with his decision to show that he can be a man and he was following his father word because he was part of a very important family to his tribe because his family would deploy the food and with out them the village would starv so o thought that he was just trying to be the man that his father would won’t him to be but to the rebel’s his decision was not approved they thought that he would just slow the group down and they would not get to where they needed to on time.

In my onest opinion the way that the rebel’s are treating the men, women and children is crool
but the way that they are not shooting or harassing or beeing violent towards them is showing that maby the rebel’s where just trying to mack a point but the fact that they are using the men as slaverry is better than shooting and being violent tewords the group and making them suffer for something that they had nothing to do with the rebel’s could of just have handled it a different way then macking the people scared of what they had been do to them.

In the end of the chapter salva has been abanded from his group because they had just left him in the barn and left salva to suffer
Salva now has make a discussion to either go to the house across the barn and ask for help or stay in the barn and starve or keep walking to another
Area and hop to find food somewhere. His opshions have been limited because he has no food or water no shelter no friends or family and no hope of servile.

If I had found myself in a similar situation that salva is in I would of gone to the house across the road and asked for help in hop that the person that might live there is a kind and thoughtful person that could spare some food and water for me but is that is not the case then I would walk into the bush and hope to run into some food and water or even another group of people that would bee willing to tack me in so I don’t have to be alone but in some cases that may not happen if I don’t find food or water I will start to dig holes to find water to drink and clim Dustin’s of trees to fin food and to look out for some sines of life that might just be a group of people and I would keep moving forward.

When the rebels told the people to sit in two groups. One group of men and another with woman and children, Salva would follow his fathers advice. To be a Man and always stay strong. Salva felt confident following his fathers advice. So he walked towards the men’s group. Salva got treated badly by the rebels as they didnt let Salva choose his own path, but then when the rebels point a gun at Salva’s head, that is just cruel as he had done nothing wrong at all and he is just 11 years old. The rebels think as, you have the strong men over here and then the unwanted woman and children that are not needed over there. Salva was put under pressure when a woman abandoned Salva at the barn overnight, because if Salva went with the woman, she would have less of a chance of passing the rebels security. The choices I would make if I was in that position, I would beg the lady to let me with her . Or stay in her barn to stay safe and eat her food.

Salva tried his hardest to follow and respect his fathers advice. His fathers advice gave him confidence and also gave him strength to make a desicion. I believe Salva made the right desicion but the rebels disagreed with the choice that Salva made. He is only 11 so he is under a lot of pressure.

I think the rebels made a good choice but also a bad choice. They were extremely bad because they invaded the village and scared everyone. The rebels also bombed the school and some houses, and then people told each other to run into the bush. The rebel’s didn’t harm anyone which was good, and they didn’t use any violence towards the people. The rebels eventually left the village. The rebels told Salva that he shouldn’t grow up to fast. If the rebels didn’t tell him that, Salva would’ve gone with the others and gotten killed.

Near the end, Salva was left alone. I personally think that Salva was terrified, lonely and felt useless. If I was left alone in that situation, I honestly don’t know what I would do. I would be devastated, confused and really upset.

Salva tried to follow the advice that his father had given to him. To always to be a man. The way that the rebels treat the women and children is just like plain unfair to the way that they treat others. Like they treat the people like their prisoners because they pointed a gun at salva. What why would you point a gun at an 11 year old boy and scaring the living daylights out of him. I would just I have all chills going down my spine if I had a rebel point a gun at my neck like a boy who is in primary school gets a gun pointed at the neck like this is just mean and plain unfair. Then to even put more pressure on the poor child the women left him at the barn overnight and left him all alone like who would leave a child alone because I wouldn’t. I would feel worried and scared I found out that I was left alone by myself with no food and water I would be miserable . If I was salva and I was in a situation like this I would go leave the barn and go searching to see II could find anyone from my tribe. Then if I didn’t find anyone I would just setup a campfire and if anyone who was in my tribe see the smoke from the campfire can come and find me so I could be with some other people from my tribe. So in my opinion I would go and search for other people from my tribe then stay at the barn with no food or water and sleep in the barn. So I believe that salva had 2 choices to make after he was left alone in the barn. The first choice was to stay at the barn and to hope that someone from his tribe would find him so he could be with people in his tribe. The second choice that salva had was to go and search

I think Salva liked the decision he made and thought it was the best decision but the rebels thought otherwise. Salva is only an 11 year old boy who just started school and the amount of pressure on him is unbelievable to a young child.

I personally think that the rebels made both a good and bad choice with their decision. They made a bad decision because they wrecked and bombed some of the villages including the school. The rebels were very mean they made every line up accordingly to there tribes. But there wa one soldier that was nice to Salva. They also put guns up to kids heads. Salva thought he was gonna die the soldier was just looking at his face. If one of the accidentally pulled the trigger it could have blown someone’s head off. Everyone probably felt threatened and if a person was disobeying they could have just shot them. A man was bashed in the head with the butt of a gun for disobeying a rule. The rebel’s are just awful but for some reason a soldier help out Salva. At the end of the chapter Salva had a couple of choices go solo and find your own food or join a group and follow them. If I we’re in a situation like this I would join a group help them hunt find food and get somewhere safe. At the same time I would look for my family.

1.When Salva's father tells him to be a man and follow his brothers lead,it comforts him to be tough. As I like to say “Life is tough but so are you.” His father's words help Salva survive these harsh conditions he is now facing, unlike other children that would cry and cause so much commotion that the group would have no other choice to kick the child out of the group for their own benefit. Following his brothers lead,Salva would be ready to become a real man and know what the expectations are.

2. Honestly,I think that the rebels are making a bad decision and also a good one. I like that the rebels aren’t threatening the people with their guns and they aren’t being violent, although I think that splitting everyone up is a bad idea. Just think, your parents are split into two groups, men and woman. Wouldn’t you be worried about your mother who is alone and you don’t know if she’s safe or what is going to happen to her and same goes for your father. It’s not a good feeling to feel this way, worrying about what is going to happen to your loved ones. I know that I wouldn’t want to be split from my family, the rebels are making a wrong decision and it is so cruel to make people feel this way. The way the rebels treated Salva, with a gun under his chin is a cruel way to scare a child and to tell him how he isn’t ready to be a man would make Salva feel as if he has failed his father's advice. Putting Salva with the lady’s and children must make him feel bad inside.

3.Salva had the choice of going to go look for them,go find his family, run away or stay in the barn. If I found myself in this situation I would stay in the barn,it isn’t a very good idea to roam alone at night when their are rebels, wild animals and much more things that can possibly harm you. Then I would go back to sleep and maybe they would come back or someone might find me. If I want to be found,I would stay where I am and because I want to be found,I want someone to comfort me in this mad, heart pounding experience.

He would be the rough tough child as this action of his fathers words would set expectations high. Also it would save him from the rebels bgetting frustrated by complaining. He reliased that listening to his fathers words was a good thing as after the man complained, he got a big whopping in the face.

I thought that one of the rebels were thoughtful of their decision as to put him in the men’s group would have become more catastrophic for
Salva. I think Salva got lucky as other soldiers might haven’t done the same. The would have been selfish and crude the child. As I think of it, he has just realised that the solider benefited Salvas life gave him a chance to survive this war. The way the treated was lucky and good. But the other people were treated bad. We they treated the men to carry heavy item. And they could be walking for hours or maybe days. That must horrible.

I would ask the lady is she knew about salvas village and if she knew the directions to the village. His farther words helped him be more confident and it made his strong and calm. My opinion of the soldiers is that there not good or bad but they just want to win the war against the government. The soldiers treated salva nicely but they didn’t give the men a choice to help them or not

His dad's advice tought him to stay calm. I would've been scared like Salva because if they bombed a school they would not be afraid to kill a little boy. If I was in a similar situation I would have stayed calm and when the rebel wasn't looking I would've ran back to a safe place near water. I think his choices were to stay with the rebel or run away and Salva stayed with the rebel because he knew if he ran he would've been killed.
