What is the Savanna

The Savanna is located in Africa, South America, Australia, India, and Madagascar. In places that are considered the Savanna, often have a latitude that will range from 10 degrees to 20 degrees north and south latitude, which makes sense because the savanna is characterized by its dry winters and wet summers. When you come across a Savanna Biome you see extensive cover or grasses all over the land, but you also would see trees scattered far from each other, and most would even consider the Savanna as being the transitional biome from those that are dominated by forest and those that are dominated by grasslands.

Temps - In the Savanna they have pretty consistent weather depending on the time of year, such as in the summer Jun-Sep they have their highest temps (96 degrees) of the year but then you hit the winter Nov-Feb you are at the lowest temps (30 degrees)

Precipitation - In the Savanna they get precipitation all year round that's pretty consistent which is around 4in of rain each month with May, March, and December being the month with the highest amount at around 6in - 7in of rain, their lowest months being August and October at around 3in.

Sunlight - On this particular graph it doesn't show the amounts of sunlight that the Savanna gets nor if its a direct angle or a low angle, but I did some extra research and I found that in the savanna they have a direct sunlight that is 10-12hr a day that plays into there temps being high all year round.

When you go to the Savanna you will come across a unique style of soil, their soil is sandy but is also Alfisols and Ultisols these soils are very old and low in fertility, but since there is a dry season more of the nutrients can stay in place.

Biotic Factors of the Savanna

Plants - In the Savanna you will see biotic factors such as tall grasses, brushes, and some trees. These three plants in the Savanna you will see that they all have things in common, such as having deep roots so that their able to access the water that's deep in the soil, and they also typically have a waxy coating to help reduce the water loss because of the drought season that goes through the Savanna.

Animals - In the Savanna you will see animal's such as a lion, elephant, and zebra. All three of these animals are different, but in many ways they are similar such as them all being able to conserve their water for long periods of time, and also them having very high a high heat tolerance.

When it comes to the Savanna they have a interesting productivity level, in the span of a year they generate 3000kcal/squared meter/year which is a 66% Net Primary Productivity Rate, and when compare to other regions of the world it would be considered on the higher side because of the amount of animals in the second trophic level.

Deforestation/Overgrazing - In the Savannas around the world there has been a growing issue of deforestation and overgrazing the deforestation had grown 45% from 2022 to 2023, and the overgrazing that's been going on can lead to erosion and desertification, but also the population goes down.

Illegal Mining - Illegal mining in the Savanna has also been a growing issue, people that live in areas near the Savanna go into old blocked off mining areas and try to salvage the little that's left in the old mines.

Wildlife poaching - In the Savanna people who live near the areas like to go and kill the animals in the biome because of the value they hold, but them doing that lead to a decline about 8% a year.

Inputs - In the Savanna three key inputs are sunlight, water, and nutrients. These are some of the key inputs because sunlight lead to the growth of the plants, water is another important input because of how little they get yearly so the little they get is important, nutrients are the final important input because they are what keep the cycle of life in order they decompose dead thing, and provide minerals in the soil to make things grow.

Outputs - In the savanna they also have important outputs such as biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and human resources. Biodiversity allows several thing to live and grow in the area, the carbon sequestration helps migrate the climate change going on, and finally the human recourses help give people things like wood, live stock things people need to live. Storages - In the Savanna they have storages such as Carbon storages, water storages, and nutrient storages.

Transfers - The Savanna has energy transfer through the food chain, and through the nutrient transfer through decomposition.

Transformations - The transformations the Savanna are photosynthesis and decomposition of dead things.
