On July 6, a rocket known as the chupinazo kicked off the mother of all Spanish fiestas. A million people from all over the planet come to Pamplona every year for the Sanfermines, an orgy of sound and color that lasts nine days and nights, and where no one is looking at their watch. This year San Fermín is looking to catch its breath in the wake of ‘La Manada’ sexual assault case. Here is how the biggest party in the world gets going.

On Friday, July 6, the chupinazo rocket was fired into the sky of Pamplona, marking nine days when attendees can forget about the rest of the world. As always, Sanfermines are a tribute to hedonism.

La Pamplonesa provides the soundtrack of San Fermín – day and night. At the bullfights and in the dianas, a kind of musical wake-up call that passes through the streets.

From the 1st to 19th March, Valencia is overturned by Fallas celebrations, a festivity that combines tradition, satire and art which shouldn’t be missed for anything in the world. Read on to learn where our passion for fire and fun comes from and you’ll be ready to enjoy Fallas like a Valencian.

The origin of las Fallas comes from the old carpenter’s tradition who, when celebrating the arrival of spring on 19th March, used to burn pieces of wood (parots) that were used to prop up their lights during the winter.
The Fallas celebrations have evolved into temporary works of art which, in some cases, cost millions of euros.
Flower Ofrenda, 17th and 18th March

All the Fallas commissions of Valencia parade through the city from their neighbourhood to the Plaza de la Virgen for a flower offering to the Virgen de los Desamparados, patron saint of Valencia.

The Cremà, 19th March

All the Fallas, small and large, must be burned on the 19th.

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this 'World's Biggest Food Fight' where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
At around 11am many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself.
The Rules of La Tomatina

Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants

Do not rip other people's T-shirts

You must squash the tomatoes before throwing them as this reduces the impact

Ensure you keep a safe distance from the lorries

As soon as you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatoes.

The tomato fight has been a strong tradition in Bunol since 1944 or 1945. No one is completely certain how this event originated.
