Original Text - Anti-Hero

"The return of Mr. Bilbo Baggins created quite a disturbance, both under the Hill and over the Hill, and across the Water; it was a great deal more than a nine days’ wonder. The legal bother, indeed, lasted for years. It was quite a long time before Mr. Baggins was in fact admitted to be alive again. The people who had got especially good bargains at the Sale took a deal of convincing, and in the end to save time Bilbo had to buy back quite a lot of his own furniture. Many of his silver spoons mysteriously disappeared and were never accounted for. Personally, he suspected the Sackville-Bagginses. On their side, they never admitted that the returned Baggins was genuine, and they were not on friendly terms with Bilbo ever after. They really had wanted to live in his nice hobbit hole so very much."

Character Portrayal - Anti-Hero

Both of these things show how he is an Anti-Hero. In my opinion, he could be anti or epic, but these quotes really show why he is anti. In the Graphic Novel, it shows that he wasn't able to control the situation, and he depended on the luck of something else. The eagle came in and took him, which was complete luck, and shows that he wasn't able to control the situation, not making him the epic hero that he could be. This also shows that he has really no power to top himself over others. In the original text, it kind of shows how he is disrespected in the real world after he returns, which an epic hero wouldn't get. He returned to the house and all of his things were in the middle of an auction. This shows disrespect because they were getting rid of all of his things, and not respecting him.

"Suddenly Bilbo’s arm went towards it drawn by its enchantment. His small hand would not close about it, for it was a large and heavy gem; but he lifted it, shut his eyes, and put it in his deepest pocket. “Now I am a burglar indeed!” thought he. “But I suppose I must tell the dwarves about it—some time. They did say I could pick and choose my own share, and I think I would choose this if they took all the rest!” All the same, he had an uncomfortable feeling that the picking and choosing had not really been meant to include this marvelous gem, and that trouble would yet come of it.

Now he went on again. Down the other side of the great mound he climbed, and the spark of his torch vanished from the sight of the watching dwarves. But soon they saw it far away in the distance again. Bilbo was crossing the floor of the hall."

The two climaxes are totally different. The original book explains a lot more detail about him stealing things and how he felt when doing it. The graphic novel kind of just skips over the fact that he was stealing it and goes right to where he talks to the elves. Another thing that is different between the two, is when he chooses the gem. This is completely skipped in the graphic novel, and it kind of makes a difference in the book.

Coming to a rise he could see his own Hill in the distance, and he stopped suddenly and said:

Roads go ever ever on,

Over rocks and under trees,

By caves where never sun has shone,

By streams that never find the sea;

Over snow by winter sown,

And through the merry flowers of June,

Over grass and over stone,

And under mountains on the moon.

Roads go ever ever on

Under cloud and under star,

Yet feet that wander have gone

Turn at last to home afar.

Eyes that fire and sword have seen

And horror in the halls of stone

Look at last on meadows green

Gandalf looked at him. “My dear Bilbo!” he said. “Something is the matter with you!

Both of these passages show the exact same thing, but differently. The original text describes way more than what the graphic novel does. But, the original text doesn't have a picture in the background of them going away to the land that is described in the original text. The graphic novel shows this way better because you can see the lands and birds that you miss in the original because it is kind of hard to picture this. Also, the graphic novel really shows the emotion on their faces and what really is happening compared to the graphic novel.

The main strengths of this novel are the pictures and the fact that the narrator's text is in a dark grey. The picture quality in this book is absolutely fantastic and shows every detail that you would need with a little description. This is also easier to follow the book and see what is clearly happening. The narrator's text is a different color also really helps. In a normal graphic novel, it would be the same color, but with this, you are able to tell when something is happening in the story, and when they are telling us something.

The major weakness is just the fact that there are too many things on one page. As shown here there are tons of pictures and text that make the book not look good to read. If they would just add another page, or two, they would be able to spread the pictures and words out to make it more interesting. Also, sometimes I may feel overwhelmed by a page that has soo much going on, even if it doesn't have many words. The pictures really throw off how much is actually on the slide, and it could just be spread out.

The largest strengths of the book are the description that it gives us. The description in the book is so phenomenal, that I can picture it in my head. Also, it does a really nice job of explaining every little detail in the book. While doing this, you don't feel like you missed out on the pictures in the graphic novel, because you know all the motions/actions from the details.

In some of the passages, the narrator loses me and I don't really know what is happening in the book. There are only some of these parts though, but otherwise, it is really good.
