At the beginning of the 18th century, the British expressed a desire to expand the territory of their American colonies. This came from a large population increase in the colonies that required a larger amount of land for the growing population. As a result of this, The British, allying with the colonies, fought a war over land with the French and Native Americans in wat was called the French and Indian War. The British won the war, and thus more land for their colonies, however the war came with the cost of debt for the British, who had to turn to taxing their colonies in an attempt to make more money. Although the British and the colonist may have improved their ideological ties from the shared sense of triumph from the war, the colonist experienced unfairness in comparison to the British and a loss of their sense of liberty as a result of the stamp act, therefore the French and Indian war deteriorated the political, economic and ideological ties between Britain and its American Colonies.

As Great Britain established more colonies in the Americas, they began implementing the policy of salutary neglect, which kept tax regulation of Britain policy and laws particularly trade laws from 1714 to 1750. In the mid-18th century, competition for land between Great Britain and France intensified. The French and Indian War was a conflict, between Britain, France, and Native American French allies that occurred over land claims in North America and resulted in British victory. Despite some thinking that the French and Indian war from 1754 to 1763 changed the political economic, and ideological relations between the British expansion of land westward, the British Order in council justifying and deciding to use the colonies profits and wealth to pay off the debt from the war but additionally the establishment of the Stamp Act in 1765 proves it was mainly unfairness to the colonists which caused said changes.

WIth the Spanish, Freanch, ENglish, and natives all controlling lands in North America prior to the French And indian war, tensions were rising. English and French settlers had Frequently come in conflict with the Natives over the past years, such as The Pequot wars and King Phillip's War. All these conflicts resulted in the expeling of the French from most of their North American holdings and led to the English being the dominant power in North America. This war impacted colonial realation with England. Although the French and Indian War saw the British and colonist fighting side by side, it resulted in th end of salutary neglect for the colonist and implementation of taxes to account for debt and therefore, the French and Indian war altered British realations between their colonies greatly on political economic and idelogical levels.

Prior to the French and Indian war, relations between the colonists were more positive and less complicated of a relationship. Before the French and Indian war, the English had much less territory in America and were still under salutary neglect from Great Britain, so the colonists were under less pressure. During and just after after the 7 years war, the relations between the colonists and the English worsened. This was caused from the end of salutary neglect and more involvement from Great Britain in their government. The French and Indian war worsened the relations between the colonists and Great Britain because the settlers left Great Britain for more self control, and the 7 years war made England involve themselves with America more. Although the French and Indian war had some benefits relations such as auspicious days in 1763, ultimately the 7 years war caused the relations between the colonists and Great Britain worsened because of taxation without representation and the proclamation line.

During the early 18th century, salutary neglect came about in British policy leading to self-gov't and American independence. Rules and laws were not enforced on colonies and trade. The trial of John Peter Zenger challenged the freedom of press given to Americans, was believed that Americans should be granted that right because it limits government power. The British established taxes on the colonists leading to the end of slautary neglect but then the Stamp Act in 1765 required people to pay tax for war efforts leading to division of colonists and British. Although the French and Indian War changed the way North America lived their lives, ultimately Britain's taxation efforts and a shift in views between the colonists and the british created a rift between both parties therefore altering relations between Britain and the colonies.
