It went quite well but my stage presence was lacking a bit and I was told that I needed to be more innovative with my vocal choices as I didn't change much from the original. I feel that we communicated well. For the second take I was told to take my mic off of the stand and this made a huge improvement to my stage presence.

In week 1 of technical development I sang in a sentimental mood to try and get some feedback as I plan to do this for my summative performance. It went well and was told it was a good choice. I was told that I should practice using my chest voice more. We also discussed breath control and how taking a short breath (almost like a gasp) will massively help me sustain my notes and phrases.

This week in technical development we talked about our influences from our childhood up until now and how we think it has influenced the way we sing and techniques we use. I said that I used to sing a lot of musical theatre so I have naturally used a lot of vibrato. We spoke about what techniques we want to implement in order to fit our current preferences. I chose to sing kaleidoscope by Chappell Roan as this is a song that includes vocal flips and this is something I would like to work on as it is currently trending.

This song is very hard to sing but I feel that I did quite well, although the flips weren't as obvious as I'd like and sometimes skewed my pitch.

This week my group and I decided to make this song into a rock song. I wasn't really on board with this but it went ok. I think the other musicians did a really good job at being innovative and creative. I was sick this week so wasn't able to project well. This was the first take and I was nervous. My feedback was that I needed to add more growl and loosen up on stage. For take 2 I used more of my chest voice and took the mic off of the stand as I have found this forces me to move around more, which helps my stage presence.

I have found that I struggle to stick the routine as I'm combating different ideas all the time, although I am trying to manage this going forward. For the days that I have implemented the routine, I've found that if I sing a song afterwards, it does help my breath control. I've found that doing yoga has not only helped my posture but has also helped me to relax and ease my nerves when it comes to performing. One of the exercises I have found to be the best is the YouTube video above.

I have chosen to do in a sentimental mood by Ella Fitzgerald for my performance. I am going to get my friend Ruben to play the guitar to accompany me. Whilst he is still learning the song I am currently practicing to a backing track and recording a voice memo to listen back to, so I can see where I can improve. Above there is a recording of me practicing. I have found that the song is hard to follow and keep in time. I have also found holding the notes a challenge but doing the breathing exercises have helped.

Diamonds and rust - This song inspires me because of her amazing vocal ability. I also like Joan Baez because a lot of her songs have a message of peace and she was a civil rights activist. She was putting out music at a time where the industry was extremely dominated by men and I really respect that.

Heart of Gold - this song inspires me because it gives me an amazing feeling and I think what's important for me is how the music makes me feel. it's simple and nostalgic.

Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones are one of my favourite bands, but this song is my favourite due to the emotion conveyed with Merry Clayton's voice. This song has a vast range of dynamics. The song conveys some harsh truths and messages about the world. This is inspiring to me as I believe music is a great way to spread messages.

Because the Night - Patti Smith is one of my greatest inspirations because she is another woman who pushed boundaries. Her lyrics are very poetic and she massively helped shape the punk movement.

An example of a Harvard reference is:

Baez, J. (1975) Diamonds and Rust. He has been practicing alone but we aren't sure if he will be able to learn it in time, so we explored some other options that may be easier for him to learn. He also told me that he can no longer do the performance with me, so I have decided to use the backing track. This has taught me a valuable lesson in time management and in the future I will start the collaboration process much earlier and make sure that the person I choose to work with is as committed as I am.

We have chosen House of the rising sun by Joan Baez as it has similarities to the original song I chose and is by the same artist. Due to this change in plans and waiting on my friend I was unable to book studio time, luckily I have logic on my laptop and my friend has recording equipment. We found that the recording sounded roomy and not the best quality. so in future I will definitely choose someone else to work with and manage my own time better so that I am able to use a studio.

I EQd the vocals to clean them up as much as I could because the recording was a bit roomy, I also used two compressors on the vocal one with a fast attack and release and one with a slower attack and release to help control the dynamics of the vocals.

I used a De-esser to get rid of some of the harsh s'es

I then used a bus to add in the reverb to have more control over it, I used the Abbey Road reverb Eq technique to have a cleaner reverb.

By using the Abbey Road EQ technique, it allowed me to apply the same reverb on the guitar, adding more coherence to the track as it made the instruments feel like they were in the same space (Production Expert, 2021).

Then because the vocal recording is a bit roomy I used a tape emulator to add some background noise and some wobble to give it an older styled feel coherent with Folk music.

We had initially planned to record our parts together but with the change of plans the guitarist didn't feel he would be able to do this. I think that we made a huge mistake when recording because I recorded vocals first with headphones on listening to a backing track. This meant that the guitarist really struggled to play in time with me. I spent ages trying to sync them up but I didn't manage to completely. In future I would either record at the same time, or get the guitarist to record first and then sing to that.

However, I do think that using the abbey road Eq technique helped to make it sound more together.

I think I managed to improve my breath control through practice and this meant that I could sing the song much better than I could initially.

However, I am unhappy that I had to use a backing track due to being let down by my guitarist but this has taught me the importance of making sure you choose someone who is reliable and to be more strict with others so that I am not in the same situation again.
