When mainstream science education comes to mind, I can't help but think of my own science education when I was in elementary school. From what I recall, I don't remember a lot of science experiments/content other than reading from a textbook and doing the occasional experiment with an owl pellet or something similar. Now, when I think of mainstream science ed, it seems so much more hands-on and interesting for students. I work in a K classroom at my school every afternoon, and the kids just finished a very fun, interesting unit on Force. They loved all the lessons and they had many opportunities to explore and test their thinking with magnets, levers and other materials.

That being said, I'm eager to learn more about this critical area of science education and I'm very concerned about marginalized voices and curriculum programs being "shut down" by the current political administration.

When thinking about mainstream science education the characteristics unfortunately what comes to mind are either "read the book and answer questions" or "do only experiments with no explicit learning". This is because I have seen two different science curriculums at work. One of them involved students reading a chapter, and then answer questions. The other one has videos online with science experiments. While way more engaging, students sometimes miss the purpose behind the lesson. I think because our focus in education is mostly centered around math and ELA, science curriculums do not need to be as rigorous or closely monitored, which is not ideal.

Full transparency, I am not sure what the characteristics of climate change would be as I am pretty positive I have never witnessed it. I would assume the characteristics would include being mindful of the environment and our impact on it as humans when teaching about things that are scientific. Since we caused climate change. I also know there are people in the world that think climate change is not real, so I am sure this form of science education would be very informative.

Showing kids the difference from the past and where we could be heading in the future is very important. We need to tap into this young generation to really make the change

I teach Biology and the one place that this fits is the ecology unit. However, this is at the end of the year so unintentionally it doesn't get as much attention as other units. Mainstream science education doesn't allow for the breadth and bigger picture that Climate Change education truly needs to be successful.

My views about mainstream science education have changed a lot since I started teaching. Oh no, I'm going to sound old... Twenty-five years ago, students came in with curiosity. They were interested in exploring phenomena and gaining explanations that were supported by data and observations. The students I teach today have different motivation. They desperately need to know how the learning is relevant to them and are quick to check out if they perceive that it isn't. They watch A LOT of YouTube, tik Tok, etc... And they have a difficult time determining if a source is credible or not. I feel like mainstream science needs to shift to meet a larger variety of learners. And learners that have immensely powerful tools at their disposal to use to enhance learning (AI), not to replace thinking.

Hello!

I started teaching in a small, private school in Portland, OR for low income families. The science curriculum and standards were one page and basically facts for students to memorize. I love how NGSS has changed things. It definitely took some adjustment, but it is more about lifelong skills for students, which is much higher on the DOK scale than basic memorization.

Students have definitely changed in my 15 years of education and I feel the effects of COVID are still present in classrooms.

At times, I have felt frustrated as a teacher with the focus on math and reading, as science can help with both of those and authentically.

I love the 5E model of lesson planning because the first thing is knowing your students and engaging them in the problem/story/question.

I feel like most students come into the science classroom knowing about climate change. We can strengthen that with more evidence, but a lot of students were already on board with it. And those who were, I wasn't going to change them or their parents opinions. But where I found misconceptions was at the solution point-students have heard riding their bikes, recycling, and planting trees as solutions. Those are realistic for them (riding bikes when there is no sidewalk or bike lane isn't safe) and they would need to plant SO MANY trees to offset just a small part of their carbon footprint. Instead, advocating for legislation, writing their elected officials, and making actual hope based change is what I would like to see them do.

Those people will need to make a new home somewhere, and this is where us vs. them mentality becomes very dangerous.

Students today will see more of the impact climate change has on their generation and the different impacts on different populations. There is a need for climate justice science education but I do believe there is a lack of teacher education in this area. This is something both teachers and students today will need to explore more now than ever.

The characteristics focus on how climate change disproportionally affects marginalized populations/communities and how that perpetuates the current inequities that were started over 200 or more years ago - this is frequently 'left out' of science education in my opinion as I see many teachers treat it as an individual unit rather than an integration across the subject matter. I see them 'save it' for the end of the year and then it conveniently gets dropped due to a 'lack of time' - I don't think there is enough climate justice in science education today
