I have felt more comfortable being the teacher leader (as opposed to feeling like I was letting the lesson plan and new curriculum dictate my instruction) with the structure of Unit 2 and 3, as well as number corner. Although time is still a challenge, specifically with fitting in all of the really neat activities and prep for number corner and work places, I am starting to feel more comfortable and like I'm getting the hang of the flow of things. I was able to slow down some of the work places and the activities that the students needed to work on and even save some activities for another time, with confidence that I'm still teaching the students and the standards. I am hopeful that the next units will continue to go smoother than before and we can discuss some tips for best storing/organizing tools after a few units and months of number corner.

I have felt more comfortable with some aspects of the units. I am still not always on track with pacing. My students do like the work places. I need to find a way to better organize and label the work places for me. I am going to start putting the directions on the tops of the lids to so the students can see them and match it more to their math folders. I want to work on how we are using the math folders too. I am not happy with that in my room, but I think I need to personalize it more for my routines.

I really like some of the lessons in Unit 2 and 3. I was ahead of the pacing guide so I actually had a week before winter break to introduce CGI journals. I really liked the idea of doubles lesson and using groups of 10's. I think first grade has a stronger mathematical understanding as some students last year never were able to grasp doubles. It was introduced in a way that most students are able to understand and hopefully eventually apply to word problems. I do find that students are not able to demonstrate as strong of thinking with word problems, but hopefully that will come. I also find that the work places are not necessary for two weeks so I make changes when necessary. Usually, I use other games or the homework journal. I am excited to see where Bridges ends up.

The students enjoyed the domino and dice games, though they seemed to lose interest in the ones that required the more extensive recording sheets (one of the work places had a bit of a labor-intensive recording sheet). The domino games really seemed to help reinforce doubles facts!

I do feel more comfortable teaching these units. I think that the more I teach, the more comfortable I feel. I still read each lesson 3 or 4 times to make sure I am doing it correctly and I ask my team mates who are usually a lesson or two ahead of me if they are getting the same results from the students that I am getting. As Mary Elise mentioned, my students were very interested in the domino and dice games. I found these games were really good to leave for a substitute.

I think I am becoming more comfortable Number Corner, the language and pacing has come easier and I can see how one month is building on the next. However, I definitely notice that 15 minutes is their max and some activities take longer than that. The kids absolutely love work places and look forward to them. Six games are too many choices for my guys to I tend to keep it down to four. Also, for it to run smoothly I usually have a small group working with me. Having everyone play with partners was difficult to manage and this allowed me to give support to those struggling. I'd love to hear what others think about math folders, I haven't found a good system. Also, a little concerned kids are not given enough practice on some skills before being tested. Thoughts?
