In "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, the citizens are very controlled and have little to no freedom. They can't decide many things for themselves and even there jobs! The citizens don't even understand there rights and they are lead to believe they live a good life. I will be ranking the top ten ways we are controlled today, in our school community with out us even realizing it!

Chewing Gum

In my school, you are not allowed to chew gum in class. No one knows the true reasoning behind this rule, but it exists. If you are caught, you are commanded to through it away. If you are caught many times chewing, there could be bigger consequences.
I do not understand why the school doesn't let you chew gum. It is a very stupid rule which does't make any sense. It isn't disrespectful of rude to be chewing gum and in some cases, it helps people focus.
This doesn't really connect to the giver because gum doesn't exist, but there are probably prohibited foods.

Set Members of a Group

In some cases when you get assigned a group project, the members of it are already decided for you. The teacher decides or it can be randomly choose. Sometimes, you get paired with people you don't work well with and you can't do anything about it.
I do understand why teachers do set members of a group. They want you to work with new people and develop social skills. In my opinion, I think having set members of a group is very controlling.
This connects to The Giver because they can't decide who they want to work with when it comes to jobs.

Homework

Every school has homework and it is given in most classes. You need to do your homework, unless your grade drops massively. About 50% of my classes give out homework regularly.
I do understand why schools give homework. They do it to review the class and for you to get a better understanding of what you learn in that lesson. It is very controlling when your teacher makes you do homework with no choice.
This connects to The Giver because the kids have to do homework too. One time, you could see Jonas working on homework.

Seating Charts

In some classes teachers make seating charts for the classes. This means the teacher decides where you sit and who you sit with.
I kind of understand why teachers make seating charts. They do this to prevent students that talk a-lot from sitting next to each other. This is taking away from you freedom by making you sit where the teacher wants you.
This connects to The Giver because the committee of elders decide where you live in the community. The citizens have no choice where they want to live.

School Assignments

Throughout the day, you are always being assigned different projects and worksheets. You need to do these and if you don't, you receive a bad grade.
Well, there is no point of school if you don't work on certain assignments and learn about different topics. I do understand the point of assignments. Though, it is a little demanding and there are fairly big consequences.
This connects to the giver because all the youth have to go learning community and follow exactly what the teachers says. If not, they are physically punished.

These schedules are put together by the school, so you have no choice what teachers or specialists you want. You follow it everyday and you don't have a choice.
Without set schedules, school would be a mess and there would be people doing what ever they want. Set schedules are very helpful when it comes to organization. But when they choose the teachers for you, thats a little controlling.
In The Giver, there whole life is a set schedule, and the people can't choose anything for themselves, It is chosen for them.

Before, it says please stand for the pledge. Without thinking about it, everyone gets up and says it.
I do understand why every school does the pledge of Allegiance. They want you to respect the country and not to be rude. I agree with the schools playing it, but not making you stand up and saying it.
This is similar to The Giver because the citizens are required to listen to the public announcements every time they go live.

They do this because they don't want you playing games on your phone or being distracted in class. This is taking away from your freedom.
This connects to The Giver because the citizens can't use phones and they probably don't even know what they are. Many things our wifi blocks is games, youtube, or inappropriate websites. It is the schools choice which websites they block and you have no say.
I do understand why the school uses an online firewall. They use it because they want students to be only on educational websites and not distracted on another website. This is good for a learning environment, even though it is very controlling.
This is similar to the giver because the citizens have a physical wall separating there community from the outside world. This is the school to choice to use a dress code.
I understand why the school puts a dress code in place due to inappropriate clothes and bulling due to what people wear. Therefore, it does serve a purpose even though it is basically violating our freedom of choice.
This is similar to The Giver because the youth are given there back/front buttoned jacket that they wear around. This relates to how some schools give a uniform all kids have to wear.
