In "Animals in Translation", the authors Grandin and Johnson state how extreme perception of animals is highly related to intelligence. In fact, many species have been identified to have deep sensory skills, such as forensic dogs. Some of them use their perceptual abilities to solve problems, which results to be evidence of high intelligence.

One example of this perceptive animals, are seizure alert dogs who in the opinion of their owners, can predict seizures before they begin. Most of them were initially trained as seizure response dogs. A woman in Florida named Connie Standley, reported to have 2 dogs who can predict her seizures about thirty minutes ahead of time. As a matter of fact, 10% of owners claimed that their seizure response dogs had turned into seizure alert dogs

Another famous example, was a horse called Clever Hans, who according to his owner Wilhelm von Osten, he could solve mathematical problems and give the answer by tapping with his hoof. Eventually, a psychologist named Oskar Pfungst demonstrated that the animal perceived unconscious cues that told him when to stop tapping. No human could train other horses in this way, so it’s assumed that Hans trained himself in “counting” skills.

There is a clear sign of high intelligence in both animals and is the fact that they were not forced to do what they did. In addition, they acquired their abilities without human help. The limitations of animal training are restricted to give rewards after a desired behavior. But it’s different when an animal perceives an event and decides to do something about it.

To conclude, the authors acknowledge that animal intelligence may be similar in humans, because of the use of perception and cognition to solve problems and eventually, to achieve goals.

Paraphrasing

1. Looking for human features in animal conduct is a drawback. What may be considered intelligent for us, it could not be necessarily the same in other species.

2. Having developed communication skills is the essence of human intellect. It's very challenging to measure intelligence in animals if we cannot understand them.

3. Vast research has been done about nervous systems of different species, in order to study their level of cognition. These investigations could propose some hypothesis that animals may develop human abilities.

The noise of the spaceships returning from Amalthea, is finally waking me up. I 'm trying to remember what I've just dreamed, but it's worthless. Just a fading memory of my grandparent's house in the country side. The smell of mangoes and papayas. The sound of the wind against the grass. All gone. Nowadays it's almost impossible to buy a single square meter of land in the continent. Not even, thinking of renting a place in the suburbs. From this tiny window of the base at the Mare Tranquillitatis, it's very difficult to see what it used to be my beloved city. Perhaps I should have stayed there, perhaps I shouldn't have left so soon. Living in the fast lane has taken me so far, but I feel like I've missed a lot of things along the way.

There are many bad decisions that do not let me sleep at night. Joining the Latin America Space Corps (LASC) could have been an exciting idea by the beginning of the 22nd century but after 50 years of wars in Mars, your spirit begins to slowly shatter. I just feel like I was used by more powerful people, just for a handful of money. In an attempt to distract myself, I started dating a girl from the communications office. Her eyes were as beautiful like the Pleiades star cluster. Truly, she was a Greek goddess. But, because of so many missions, she forgot about me. She end up making an "union of affairs" with my commander in chief, and they get a nice house in the underwater colony in the Artic Ocean. She just wanted his prestige to advance in her career, and I was only a stepping stone in her academic path. After half a century of military work, I asked for a retirement. The high command did not accept my petition, but after insisting They they relocated me to a civil branch: The boring office of Space Exploration.

But one way or another, the sun has started to shine again on my life. From the debris of the stateless settlements on Mars, our scouting regiment found a little girl who had lost her parents. I decided to take care of her, and from then, I had a purpose on my life again. Despite the sunlight was very weak out of the orbit, my mornings had an special glow that gave me a lot of energy. Taking the space shuttle was not long trip anymore. I eventually started to feel better despite my age of 144 years. Not even a single gray hair when looking at myself in the mirror. I considered looking for a better for place for my little girl to grow up. The gravity at the moon was not the optimal for child development. So, I rented a medium-size floating condominium in the orbit around the Earth. It had a lot of gardens, small creeks, and even a waterfall, just like the good all days at the Chicama Valley. I'm sure that my grandparents would have enjoyed that view. At 400 km above the atmosphere I was so close to the sky, and so close to a paradise.

Saving someone else's life, but not caring your own one? Is that how you want to end your last days? Even though you may feel recognized because your academic degrees, you could ruin your life very soon. As a matter of fact, a recent survey of physicians found that 42% experienced symptoms of burnout in the USA, but we must take into account that these results were obtained before the pandemic. Being a doctor nowadays is not longer a satisfactory job, and there are many reasons for not to be one of them anymore.

Many people assume that Medicine is a well paid career. Although the salaries are a little higher compared to other health allied professionals, you must study 10 years before earning an acceptable stipend. Even so, during the years of university it's almost impossible to have a part-time job because of tight class schedules. You must also work in remote areas in the first years after graduation, and you have to work at least in 2 places, if you want to get a good economic income.

Moreover, other workers will expect that you have good job benefits. Probably in the past, but in these times it's difficult to get a permanent job contract. After the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, thousands of physicians were fired after the number of COVID cases went down and several health facilities were closed. And even though your employer can provide you insurance against risk accidents, you are still exposed to infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and even AIDS, if you prick yourself with a contaminated needle. A terrible situation, indeed.

Nevertheless, your parents would believe that after finishing medical school, you will have free time for yourself and your hobbies. But after working for a year in a hospital, you'll realize that you don't spend many days with your family, your friends or your partner. In addition you must work some weekends and holidays, including Christmas. And even If you finally get some free days, you must assist to congresses and courses in order to keep you up to date in the medical science. You'll do that until you retire.

To summarize, ...
