Date with Sally

Holden got to the place of meeting with Sally and she showed up 10 minutes late to their date.

"'...Am I late?' I told her no, but she was around ten minutes late, as a matter of fact." (Salinger 124)

The significance of this is that Sally showed her lack of interest by showing up late after being told they have somewhere to be.

Next they go to the theater

They horsed around in the car a little bit and then went to the theater and it seems like a lot is going on in this part of the book and this is kind of unlike holden. For example " Then, To show you that i'm crazy I am, when we were coming out of this big clinch, I told her I loved her and all" ( Salinger 139). This is important because it shows a crazy side of holden that we have never seen before.

Ice Skating

Sally makes an impulsive decision to go Ice Skating at Radio City. Even though a little against it and shocked by the impulse of the decision Holden agrees. This shows his conformity to those who he is slightly caring for. It also shows that he is not as confident as he seems because he told us he would be mad if she was late and didn't say anything and now isn't saying anything about this decision.

"I didn't say I didn't want to,' I said. "Sure if you want to." (Salinger 128)

This is significant because it shows his fear in society beyond what he says. Holden shows he is not as strong as he portrays himself.

Next Holden looks to move from New York

After there date they are moving very quickly in there relationship and Holden wants move away with her. He wants to go somewhere in Vermont or Massachusetts which leads to sally getting kind of mad. For example " You can't just do something like that," old Sally said. She sounded sore as hell" ( Salinger). This just shows that Holden and sally are looking at tings differently and she wants him to slow his role.

Sally leaves Holden

Due to Holden's anger issues he told her "You give me a royal pain in the ass, if you want to know the truth." (Salinger)

This shows that whenever Holden doesn't get what he wants he acts out of anger. He called her names and yelled which cause Sally to cry. Being that she is the only person who he has spent legitimate time with, it is a very bad move to push her away like this. Sally explains she doesn't want to be around him and suggests she goes home, Holden offers to take her and she resists. Holden ends up making the excuse that he didn't want her to come anyways, yet it is obvious he did and she couldn't handle him.

Holden tries to call Jane

After Sally leaves Holden is walking around the city and he thinks about giving sally a call. He finally grows the courage to call her and when he does there is no answer and she must not be home. The problem is That he is looking for something to do and he makes up a whole plan of what he was going to do with her. For example " if she was home yet, take her dancing or something somewhere" ( Salinger). This is significant because it shows how much he truly cares about Jane and the fun he wants to have with her..

Holden and the Army

After holden watches a movie that involved the army. He talks about how he would never want to be in the army and he would never do it because of the time that is involved. He says " It wouldn't be too bad if they'd just take you out and shoot you or something, but you have to stay in the army so god-dam long" ( Salinger). Holden also talks about how is brother was in the army for such a long time and talks about what he had to go through. This does kind of show a weak side to Holden becasue he would rather get shot then have to serve in the army

Carl Luze

Carl was three years older than Holden and graduated school. Holden decides to give him a call about getting together. Holden wanted someone to go out to dinner with so that he didn't have another night alone. He couldn't do dinner but they agreed to get drinks at 10:00 that night. "...thought he might want to have dinner with me somewhere..." (Salinger) This shows how Holden fears being alone and tries to turn it into the fact that people want to see him. He tries to show that he doesn't care but he truly needs someone.

Final Slide

Over these three chapters Holden had a lot of ups and downs. Holden needs someone to help him settle in his new environment. From going on a date and having a good time, to her leaving him due to impulse and anger. He also solidified the idea of his fear of being alone. He called Jane, and Carl. He tried to get Sally to move away with him. He "...thought maybe I might give old Jane another buzz." (Salinger). He went from being afraid to call her to doing it out of desperation. He even called someone he used to go to school with. Holden is not as strong as he acts and these chapters proved this.
