In the poem Tattoo my Ted Kooser the main idea is the juxtaposition between the man in the start of the poem being a young and prideful man and the same man being described as a old man with a blue heart.

In the poem the symbolism being used is the tattoo. The tattoo can can taken as a symbol as the mans hardships that he had endured in his young life and his ability to overcome them. But when the man is old the tattoo can symbolize the life he once had and the memory of his energy and perseverance had once had.

In the poem the author uses the allusion " his heart had gone soft and blue". This could be a metaphor for how you feel as you start to get older. The energy and drive that you had in your heart starts to fade. The feeling of strength and your heart leaves and and you feel soft and blue.
