What do you believe about the purpose of school?

The purpose of school, is to educate students academically, socially, emotionally, and career readiness wise. This is so students can obtain basic skills, such as Math, Reading, Writing, etc., and knowledge needed to function in today's society. School, provides a safe place for students to learn, grow, and mature as they develop their intellectual knowledge and experiences. Students' who receive a good education, have the opportunity after high school, to move onto higher education to pursue their goals and dreams within their chosen career.

Quote: "Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a poor person can become a doctor; that the son of a labor worker can become the head of a company; that the child of a farm worker can become the president of the United States." -Unknown Author

Who should decide what students need to learn?

In every school curriculum, students should need to learn the basics such as Math, Reading, Writing, and English to be prepared for higher education. However, there should be a collaboration between teachers, school psychologist, parents, the school counselor, and administration when it comes to deciding what students should learn. I think it is also important, to provide a Needs Assessment Survey, that would allow students, parents, and teachers the opportunity to suggest what the curriculum should look like, and what subject material should be taught in the classroom. The survey, would also provide information/data on students' common interests, and what learning material is relevant to each new generation of students.

How do you define curriculum? How do you think it should be developed?

A curriculum, is a series of planned learning for different subjects, that are taught in school to help nurture the developmental knowledge and growth, of students' education and individuality. It provides students the opportunity to explore their individual curiosity, about the past, present world around them, and the future that awaits them. A curriculum also helps create content, develop approaches, and direct teacher instruction within the classroom.

I think curriculum should be developed in collaboration with multiple school professionals such as teachers, school psychologist, school counselors, and administration that have had the opportunity to teach, and have experience with following a curriculum. A curriculum should also be developed by utilizing evidence-based research practices, that are proven to be effective in educational learning within the classroom, and most importantly shown through student success.

Should there be a different curriculum for different students?

In general, the main core subjects such as Math, Reading, Writing, English, Science, and History should stay the same to provide a standarized meticulous program, and to meet certain educational criteria and standards. However, I also feel that yes, there should be a different curriculum for exceptional students, also known as students who have been placed in special education. For example, students who have a difficult time learning certain material, due their learning differences, go to learnig support classes, in order to be provided with modified material. Which means, if the material in the regular curriculum is going to be modified for students who are having difficulty, then why not just provide a tailored curriculum to students who have learning differences. These students, can still be provided the basic skills and mandatory subjects, but I do not feel they should have the exact same curriculum as everyone else as whole, because one curriculum, does not work for all students. One curriculum does not meet all students' needs.

If a different curriculum was to be developed, then that is what the students' should be tested on, and Special Education supervisors, directors, and teachers should be the ones to assist in developing a specialized curriculum for those exceptional students. Another example to further back up my opinion, I am a student who was in special education classes for every subject since 6th grade, except Science and Social Studies, but my special education teacher, also modified both my Science and Social Studies quizzes/tests. When I got to high school, I was no longer in any of the special education classes, except for Math, because it is one of my specific learning disability's that I most struggled with. My point is, even though my learning material was extremely modified from the time I was in 6th grade, all the way up to high school, I was still able to catch up to the rest of the students, because I worked very hard to be successful, and also because I was taught the core subjects, along with their basic skills within the curriculum provided to me at Central Bucks.

For students with learning differences and in special education classes, sometimes the curriculum is just too hard and they give up before they even start, sometimes drop out of school, and usually do not go onto higher education. According to the Bureau Labor of Statistics, people with a disability are less likely to have completed a bachelor's degree than people with no disability. Among people age 25 and older in 2014, 16.4 % of people with a disability had completed at least a bachelor’s degree. By comparison, 34.6 % of people with no disability had completed at least a bachelor’s degree. About 1 in 5 people with a disability had less than a high school diploma, compared with 1 in 10 people with no disability. I believe these statistics have to do with the untailored curriculums in schools and universities, where students' who blatantly learn differently, are being provided a mandatory curriculum, that does not account for their learning differences.

Source: https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2015/people-with-a-disability-less-likely-to-have-completed-a-bachelors-degree.htm

Also, within my role as the counselor my job is to provide a developmental comprehensive guidance program of content that is evidence-based researched; regarding best practicies, within a systemic way to all students, in order to build the culture and climate of the school I am in.
