Because I’m a #coolmom, I make give my kids the opportunity to do extra math in the summer. I am all kinds of jazzed about a website called The Art of Problem Solving. It has an approach that treats math like a language and brings clarity to why math works the way it does.

They have a great elementary school level - Beast Academy - and an online site with games and such that you can subscribe to if you want.

On our end, Rowan and her friend, Hadley, are using the (free) downloadable placement tests they offer to find out where they fit on the APOS curriculum spectrum. Once they know, we’re going to order matching guide books and workbooks. They’re going to do some amount independently and some collaboratively via Face Time.

Join us every day at 1 PM to play the party game Mafia on Zoom.

  1. Read the rules below.
  2. If you want to play, create a free Zoom account.
  3. On days you want to play, join Rowan’s Zoom room 425-190-6740 at 1 PM. Games end at 1:40 pm, sharp. (Meetings on free Zoom accounts can only be 40 minutes long. If everyone really wants to play more, we can stop the meeting and create a new one.)

How to play:
  • We will need at least 6 players (but it's better with more). 
  • Choose one person to be the narrator/leader. The narrator will choose one or more people to be the mafia (depending on the size of the group), one person to be the doctor, and the rest to be innocents.  The game has 3 repeating phases:
  • NIGHT FALLS
    • Once everyone’s ready to play, the narrator says, "NIGHT FALLS," and everyone must stop their video and mute their microphones.
    • Then the narrator will send a private message to each player to tell them their role: mafia, doctor, or innocent. If there is more than one mafioso, the narrator will tell each of them who the other one is so that they can plot by private chat.
    • The mafia will decide who they want to kill, and will DM the narrator. 
    • The doctor will DM the narrator with the name of who they want to save. 
  • DAWN ARRIVES 
    • The narrator says or texts the whole group, “DAWN ARRIVES,” and everyone must turn on their video and microphone.
    • The narrator will tell a short, made-up story about who just died and how, and whether or not the doctor saved them.
    • Whoever was killed by the mafia confesses their role. If all the innocents are killed, the mafia win.
  • ACCUSATIONS
    • Next, everyone gets to talk for a short period about who they think is part of the mafia, and to defend their own innocence. 
    • Votes are then posted in the group chat about who the group wants to accuse as being a member of the mafia. 
    • Whoever is accused confesses their role. If both of the mafia have been voted out, the innocents win. The doctor counts as an innocent when deciding who wins.
    • If there’s a tie, no one dies.
  • Any players who have died or who have been accused are out of the game. They turn off their cameras but can leave their microphones on.
  • Repeat until one side wins. If there are two people left, one mafia and one innocent, the dead innocents get to vote along with the two people left. Dead mafia can't vote.
