I have visited some of the local school libraries to see their makerspaces in action and can see that students really enjoy this space! It gives them freedom to explore other types of learning in school whether it is a board game that expands their mind to thinking outside the box to creating something entirely of their own making. I began on a smaller level in the library with board games, jigsaw puzzles, circuits, makeu maker kits, 3D pens etc. All the items have been well received by the students,which is why I am seeking to expand into the computer lab with a more formal makerspace. I am looking to have the space be utilized by students during free time as well as having times that the space can be utilized by classroom teachers and their students. Having flexible seating as part of the space will allow for collaborative work with classes as well as smaller groups of students who share a passion for a particular type of project.

Yes, difficult behaviors dramatically improved very quickly, but to my surprise, I observed students communicating about their learning needs in positive ways. Students began asking politely to try someone else's seating choice and received polite responses back. There was never one argument over seating options. Students quickly learned what kind of arrangements worked well for themselves and time on task improved.  Students had greater ownership of their learning and behavior due to their personal choices in seating arrangements. My students truly impressed me as I watched them manipulate seating and utilize different surfaces  in ways that I had never considered before. Eventually, I asked them what types of additional seating they wished we had, which led me to create a Donor's Choose project.
