Its importance in military, political, social or cultural terms is tremendous. The French suffered about 45,000 casualties and the Russians suffered about 30,000 casualties. Even though the Russian army was in bad shape, they managed to drive Napoleon out of Russia. The victory for Russia was a turning point in the campaign. This loss for Napoleon resulted in the halting of Napoleon's march across Europe, and resulting in his first exile, to the Mediterranean island of Elba.

Quote: The soldiers replied with joyful cries; they told Napoleon: “Be assured: today we have all sworn to win, and we will win.” This quote is ironic because they were so sure that they would conquer the Russian army and resulted in humiliating defeat.

Links to Website/Video: Website, Video
