Start with 20 and 19, which is close to 20...makes 40 but remove one. Then same with 18 and 17. Then round 16 to 15 and mentally add it from there. As the numbers decrease, then I would add on...added groups of numbers together (e.g.,  1,2,3,4,5,6), then keep going and group them into friendly numbers.
