Define and evaluate the concept of closeness (Ratliff, Ch. 14) as an important musical element across all kinds of music. Do you agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element? Why or why not? Examine at least one musical example in Ratliff’s playlist in detail – how does it exemplify this musical concept? Find at least one musical example outside of Ratliff’s playlist and justify its inclusion – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

Closeness is hard to define. Its about the artist being mentally close to the music that they are performing and playing at a high level. Closeness can effect the music because of how in your face or intense the music can be. Or closeness can be along the lines of listening very closely to an intricate piece.

yes i agree with Ratliff's arguments regarding the element of closeness. I think its very interesting to focus on the closeness of an artist to the piece and how i should listen to music with a better sense of focus on what the artist is doing with their voice or instruments.

B.O.B. By OutKast exemplifies the concept of closeness because of the focus on each and every lyric. The song is relatively quick and it takes a lot of focus to hear and experience all of the song. It may take a few listening focused on closeness to really hear and learn the overall meaning of the song.

I think that Always with me always with you by Joe Satriani shows closeness because even thought there aren't any words or lyrics through the piece you still need to listen closely to all the things that Joe Satriani is doing musically on his guitar to get across the overall meaning of the song and show what the song means to him. I think it should be included because its a special type of song that you can show closeness to because of the lack of lyrics and the emotion of the guitar playing. Its a different kind of focused listening to the closeness of his technique.
