<description>Synchronous computer-mediated communication is known for giving learners the opportunity to interact with students in other parts of the world in order to practise a foreign language outside the traditional classroom (Chapelle, 2008: 586). Studies such as Sykes (2005), Cohen and Ishihara (2005), Sykes and Cohen (2006), Sykes (2009), and Etae et al. (2017) have implemented CMC in order to allow students to practice different speech acts. However, none of these studies focuses on how a Spanish student could learn how to perform a speech act in English. There are scarce studies on this topic. This is the reason why this paper focuses on a preliminary stage of a longitudinal study, which is currently being carried out, on the impact that SCMC has on the use of the speech act of apologies and the acquisition of intercultural communicative competence. In other words, it will discuss the type of explicit instruction that students from Spain need in order to improve their performance in expressing apologies and especially how the interaction with English-speaking students through Skype will help them to acquire the strategies that L1 speakers use in every-day conversations. In order to do that, we will take Leech’s (2014) taxonomy on apologies into consideration. Furthermore, Spanish-speaking students will undertake a questionnaire as a pre- and post-test, in order to measure their level of pragmatic knowledge before and after the technology-mediated interaction with English-speaking students. It is hoped that after the telecollaborative exchanges students from Spain will improve their performance in expressing apologies and, subsequently, their pragmatic competence.

Key words: synchronous computer-mediated communication, telecollaboration, pragmatic competence, speech act.
