In my interpretation of the song "Lua" by Bright Eyes, the message conveyed is about the ups and downs of life, and the feeling of loneliness that can come with it. This song narrates about depression addict. As if the author of this song thinks that the sky has lost its colour and the light doesn't seems to appear for him. The lyrics describe about feeling alone and escapism. 

The first verse is about drug, they are tolerating a freezing walk and get reject by taxis.  The next verse is about the sober time while drinking coffee. He smile when he's sad and smile when he's mad, so that no one can see the pain.
All his friends walked away and left him alone with the pigeons and the reflection of himself. The imagination he has created of himself vanished when he woke up and he was forced to to face the reality himself.  It’s like being drained of energy just at the thought of running a marathon. In the same manner, it's like falling into the void. 
The third verse shows him talking about someone important. As life is hard. It feels like he can't understand himself anymore. He is lying to a girl that he gave her all his heart to her, knowing he will leave her one day and never be there for her. Giving her a fantasy to lose herself to only awake that knowing he was using her. 

Next verse again its about escapism. That he is suffering from the pain, fell unconscious from drinking too much. He find that if he go to the end of that bottle or the just one more cut, that he will stop seeing what he hate or love. Nevertheless with this in mind, he might die from this but it doesn't matter to him at all. It has too much emotional pain to care about.   

Lastly, the last verse "And I'm not sure what the trouble was that started all of this
The reasons all have run away but the feeling never did" . He might not aware what actually caused his depression. He just completely feel lost and have negative emotion. The darkness sticks with him, follow everywhere he go. All his reasons gone off but his feelings never.
