It's an area of mathematics that has always just made sense to me, so I am excited to teach it. To gain some insight, I pulled up NC's Mathematics Standard Course of Study. I used the state math standards to compile the following list for key geometric concepts at the elementary level: 

Identify, analyze, compare, contrast, create and compose  2D and 3D shapes and reason with their attributes, including but not limited to: partitioning, modeling, orientation, dilation, mapping, and decomposition. 

Classify and compare shapes based on lines and angels in 2D figures, such as drawing and identifying lines, points, line segments, rays, angles, vertices, and perpendicular and parallel lines and their relationships. 

Measure angels using degrees and classify them based on their measurements.

Use formulas to calculate volume, area, and surface area. Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. 

Recognize and identify properties of symmetry. Recognize parallel and intersecting lines.

Identify congruent shapes after transformation using translation, rotation, dilation, and reflection. 

Understand properties of the coordinate plane and identify and interpret the x and y coordinates  and their given axis’s to understand relationships between points.

Classify quadrilaterals in a hierarchy based on properties.

Study real life problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

In my opinion this foundation should start with learning and understanding vocabulary.  Teachers should model using appropriate vocabulary beginning at the early grades to prevent misconceptions. For example, we as teachers should not use terms such a “diamond shape” to describe something. We should use a more proper term such as polygon or rhombus.
 
Moving on from vocabulary I believe basics such as how to measure area and parameter, how to graph,  and how to measure angles should also be covered in elementary grades.

*How to measure angles using protractor, what degrees are, types of angles and how different angles can be used to find a missing degree (i.e. when you have a straight line, 180 degrees, and one angle is 80 degrees and the other angle is a variable representing the missing number). 
*Knowing the difference between dimensions of shapes (i.e. 1D, 2D, and 3D). Having students being able to make, draw, and analyze these shapes as well as recognize them. 
* Vocabulary such as line, plot, ray, angle, degrees, and much more. 
* Using real world applications to measure students understanding of the content area in a formative assessment.
