Inspiration #1 - Reviving a Franchise

These days, time and time again franchises are being revived as they are essentially "continuing episodic instalments designed to boost an IP" (Scream VI, 2023) but they are also a way of continuing to give content to a fanbase while also introducing the newer generations to the franchise.
- Scream
- Halloween
- Friday the 13th
- Saw
- Alien
- Orphan
- Evil Dead
- Final Destination
Just to list a few franchises that in the last 5 years have
been announced or have been made like the Halloween trilogy (2018-2022) linking
back to the 1978 classic or Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023) that link back
to Scream 1-4 (1996-2011). There has been a proven success in doing this
because one it represents itself in the box office returns but also in the
increasing growing of these franchises fanbases because of the time frames and
different generations being introduced to these movies.

Facts (White Hat)
Based on already done research I know that franchises have a good return rate and that a very large group of people like horror. What I need to get some more information about is how to make that promotional video so appealing the viewer wants to keep watching and I'll do this by watching more promotional ads for horror film to understand what elements work and won't.

Feelings (Red Hat)
Right now I feel good about what I planning and where I am going with it all but I am fully aware also when it comes to filming it all things will change and I will most likely film something and want to redo it or completely change it so I need to allow time to be able to do so.

Cautions
(Black Hat)
My most worrying risk is making this promotional video too scary if this was going to be on YouTube then it would still need to be safe enough for viewing, which means no swearing and not a crazy amount of gore that's how all movie trailers tend to work as ads and there is usually a red band version available as an alternate but that is not used as an ad.

Benefits
(Yellow Hat)
The benefit is I know this topic and I am fairly confident with my knowledge alone will help to achieve a successful promotional video.

Creativity
(Green Hat)
The idea that comes to mind to 'fix' my worry is the music because horror has such a big contribution when it comes to music working on a score for the trailer and making it very out there I believe will make the trailer more appealing.

Process (Blue Hat)
I feel as if I need to think about all the components in order to make this promotional video successful. I need to consider location, music, time to film, what to film, how to film it etc, there is a lot to consider, and I want to do this well as it is something I am passionate about being the filming and horror films as well.

Attention
To grab the attention of this viewer I want to do something big and almost create a fear but the good kind, the kind that brings you in and makes you want to keep watching. In order to do that the first five seconds are crucial as I will have to create some crazy scare that just is so attention grabbing.

Interest
The whole point of create a promotional video from a franchise it automatically to create interest as it brings the new generation into a moment of history and they are a part of it, so it is essentially inviting them into something special.

Desire
While still sticking to what a horror film is I would like to include a moment of humour towards to end before the call the action part, I'm not sure wheather I'm thinking funny humour or some badass moment that is followed by some funny tagline buy that it the way I'm leaning towards to have a moment of laugher to show a bit of lightness towards to audience.

Action
My call to action will be the title card with also saying that it is on cinemas on a certain date and saying book your tickets now at your local cinema or via the website below. I will have to work on what to say because only have 30 seconds it is important to use every second to the most.

What is the message you wish to promote in your video?
The message I would like to promote in successful and pleasing teaser video for a horror film that has the right amount of horror elements but also does not go overboard to where the viewer would want to look away or become uninterested.

How is your video ‘creative’ and different to those that already exist? (Are you taking a new approach? Focusing on a new perspective? Targeting a new audience?)
While this 'movie' will be a part of a franchise it will be introducing a new generation to what has come before and how the very same 'killer' is up to their old tricks with a new victim being the main girl.

The main reliance is going to be with the execution of the film and musical score as well as the dialogue because slasher film/horror films and been done for almost 100 years now and this 'movie' is still a horror film so execution and creating eye catching scenes are extremely important.

The musical score has such an importance to a film as it can be the defining feature that can set the tone and mood for a film and it is an extremely powerful tool that has been used in films for an extremely long time.

For the elements of a horror film the use of sharp notes will be utilised as well as a build-up of strings to create that tense environment for the viewer just before something goes wrong.

I am hoping to actually be able to create my own score for this promotional teaser with the use of garage band and with the access to all types of instruments through the app I believe this is something that is achievable.

Why?
I would say dark tones will help me achieve this effect with the small display of red when needed, seeing how red represents blood in the horror world it makes the viewer feel that fear.

Which fonts best represent these emotions? Why?
Very sharp or bold fonts to represent that sharpness and blunt factor or even a oozing font to represent blood to give that creepy ambiance.

With these fonts there are 3 concepts for the title and 3 concepts for the paragraph writing and when it comes to the title I am considering either concept #1 or #2 however if I was to use concept #1 it would strictly only be for the title otherwise the use of it could get overwhelming.

For the paragraph font concept #1 is what I am leaning towards as I like the simplicity about the font itself and just how it flows.

The final decisions will be very similar to the colour palette and will all be through trial of seeing how each font presents itself on the website as currently I would like to have options.

The main reason for these font choices was because for the title font I wanted to keep consistent with the horror ambience and go for a creepy title font which I believe I have found in the options about.

For the paragraph font I wanted something neutral knowing that the title font would be quite eye catching I wanted something toned down to keep a nice balance.

These are the three final concepts for colour palette and they're all very similar to each other while very small things are differing between the three like shades for the most part.

In turns of which one will be utilised I am leaning towards concept #1 however I do like to touch of blue within concept #2 as it just provides another colour while also still fitting in with that dark tone.

Ultimately to figure out which one to full committed to when it comes to the promotion video and the website it will be through trial and error to see weather to blue and red tones work together and that it my biggest concern.

However the main reason for the choice of colours was because I wanted to stick with the dark tones and horror impression and I believe with all these tones I will achieve that but using the blacks, whites and greys for neutral colours and the reds and possibly blues for that pop of colour.
