I am a freelance visual artist specialising in ceramics, installations and large scale sculpture. I find inspiration in stories. My work connects people to place and highlights specific themes bringing them to the forefront, creating thoughtful links and raising awareness. 

 I have experience devising and facilitating authentic, bespoke creative projects; to coincide with themes, tailored to individual specifications.
I also engage with the community, creatively exploring different themes. My practice is focused on intergenerational multicultural inclusion, offering positive exciting art experiences and embedding a sense of belonging.
I have worked with numerous partners in previous Festival of the Minds events, including creating a gender based domestic violence  installation and a large scale mouth, visually representing oral diseases . I conduct research in the areas of asylum and migration policies with a focus on Brazil and Latin America and children and International relations. I am currently working on a project analysing Venezuelan refugee children's drawings in Brazil.

I love to collaborate with different partners outside Academia. Together with the local journalist Livia Barreira, I have participated on the Festival of Debate and the Migration Matters Festival. I would love to collaborate with different artists in the future.

 

My studies have explored carers and care provision, the significance of the mouth in old age, and the representation of women and ageing. The award-winning Look At Me! Currently, I am working with a team of academics and policy and practice co-investigators on a project - Ethnicity and Unequal Ageing - looking at the experiences of ageing for communities of older people in Rotherham and Sheffield. We are exploring stories of what it means to get older, older people's views on the places they live in, how they feel included, what changes they can see, and how relationships to people and places might change with ageing.

 

We want to develop creative ways of sharing those stories that have people and their communities at the centre but which also reach out to the different organisations that provide services and make policies for older people. Ideally, we are looking for ideas about how to bring together quantitative and qualitative data or, to put it simply, statistics and stories. The emphasis is on inclusion.

One of my main focuses is the calligraphic interpretation of words, and how they are applied in public settings. I also investigate how the viewer interacts with text if presented as a tactile 3D object.

My work aims to understand the network of people and perspectives involved in implementing and managing responsible AI, and how the definition of "responsible AI" flexes and changes for different stakeholders in practice. I'm interested in AI as a distinct profession and an area of (often invisible/unrecognised) professional practice.
 
I'd love to find a creative partner interested in exploring and expressing the interconnected networks of people, perspectives, and processes that touch on "responsible AI", and how the meaning and material of responsible practice changes from person to person and context to context. I'm interested in exploration and reinterpretation of these questions as well as creative communication strategies!

I make work that embraces the honesty of clown and the complexity of being human. I use comedy to explore difficult subject matter, using small ideas to shine a light on the more unwieldy ones. It can be autobiographical, although not always. Sometimes it’s about the pain of losing a parent, sometimes it’s about tiny little birds and often it can be about both.

Look After Your Knees is my first solo show which I plan to develop further in 2024. The show will explore complex family relationships and the journey taken by someone working out who they are after a massive loss.

My work connects with people who may have a shared experience or who want to explore something new and thoughtful. 

We are an artist collective that draws from archives and collections to create artworks that reclaim narratives in a contemporary context. The project manifests through research collaborations, exhibitions and public programmes with selected archives, academics, collections, museums and galleries. 

The Collective takes its name from a form of water with a unique atomic structure that is often used for the stabilisation of volatile matter. The materiality of Heavy Water (D2O) is mystical; permeating organic bodies, calming violent creations, grounding and giving weight to something fluid and intangible. It is representative of the processes of investigation and methods of making developed in response to shared subject matter.

Our digital archive maps the constellation of artefacts and documents the Heavy Water Collective have encountered in archives and collections situated across the United Kingdom. It also forms a new collection of artworks, developed in response to the artistic research undertaken, and documents the exhibitions and events in which the collective have participated.

Maud Haya-Baviera has exhibited her work in both solo and group shows nationally and internationally, receiving a number of awards in relation to international projects. Victoria Lucas (b.1982, UK) is an artist and researcher based in the North of England. Recent projects include the curation of PostNatures at Graves Gallery, Sheffield, which explores the connections that exist between the histories of women’s bodies and natural landscapes as colonised subjects, and questions how they might be reclaimed in a post-natural context. She is one third of the art collective Heavy Water, alongside Maud Haya-Baviera and Joanna Whittle, a project that draws from archives and collections to create artworks that reclaim narratives in a contemporary context. She has recently exhibited her work with Site Gallery, Sheffield (2021), Freelands Foundation, London (2022), and The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield (2021). She is 0.5 Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Central Lancashire and part-time PhD Candidate in the Art, Design and Media Research Centre at the Sheffield Hallam University.

For Festival of the Mind in 2022 I Partnered with Dr Lizzy Craig-Atkins from Sheffield University Archaeology Department, exploring funerary practices to create new narrative objects inspired through engaging with Lizzie’s research and our conversations around this. 

 

 

I am currently exhibiting in Ghosted Ground at the University of Sheffield Library following a year long Research project with the National Fairground and Circus Archive, funded by an Arts Council National Lottery project Grant. The exhibition includes my work alongside archival material, the work of photographers and interviews conducted with the Showman community. The exhibition as a whole explores otherness and un-connectedness whilst uncovering themes of mourning, love and movement across the landscape. 

 

I am interested in collaborating with someone  to extend aspects of this project, surrounding identity and culture developed in transience and using  both archival material and their research to understand the development of cultures as well as the prejudices and misapprehensions against them .
