"In California, MTSS is an integrated, comprehensive framework that focuses on CCSS, core instruction, differentiated learning, student-centered learning, individualized student neds, and the alignment of systems necessary for all students' academic, behavioral, and social success."

I think it is important to understand the meaning of MTSS ( multi tiered system for supports). This may be a bland sentence but sometimes we need to get straight to the point early on so the rest of the information has meaningful context. This also directly states different ways that California supports all students. This is a good foundation for districts to adapt and implement into their own student demographic.

“However, the MTSS process has a broader approach, addressing the needs of all students by aligning the entire system of initiatives, supports, and resources, and by implementing continuous improvement processes at all levels of the system.”

The above quote and Venn Diagram is another great way that shows how RTI2 is just a part of the bigger picture MTSS. RTI2 has a smaller focus wear as MTSS has a broader approach so that it can reach a larger amount of students. Not only does MTSS address the needs of our students but it is consistently implementing improvements to the system being very progressive.

“CDE’s RtI2 processes focus on students who are struggling and provide a vehicle for teamwork and data-based decision making to strengthen their performances before and after educational and behavioral problems increase in intensity. Please visit the CDE Web site on RtI2 for further information.”

RTI2 Is a specific part of MTSS we can think of MTSS as the big picture and RTI2 as a sub focus of it. RTI2 lays out a framework for students who are struggling and need extra support. It is backed by data making it a stronger and more detailed way to support our students. This excerpt from the text shows us that the goal of RTI2 is to strengthen our students performances before and after educational and behavioral problems take place and reach extreme levels.

"In California, RtI2 is a systematic, data-driven approach to instruction that benefits every student. RtI2 integrates resources from general education, categorical programs, and special education through a comprehensive system of core instruction and tiered levels of interventions to benefit every student. The CDE work group expanded the notion of RtI to RtI2, Instruction and Intervention, to emphasize the full spectrum of instruction, from general to intensive."
