The Engineering class will be participating in a cross-curricular 9-week project that will encompass language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, technology, gym, health, spanish.

We will be looking at endangered animals that are considered at risk of extinction. Many are becoming endangered because of the loss of critical habitats (areas vital to the survival of endangered or threatened species).

“Once gone, they're gone forever, and there's no going back. Losing even a single species can have disastrous impacts on the rest of the ecosystem, because the effects will be felt throughout the food chain. From providing cures to deadly diseases to maintaining natural ecosystems and improving overall quality of life, the benefits of preserving threatened and endangered species are invaluable.”

Each student will work with a group of 5-6 students to recreate the habitats of their chosen species. The idea is for the zoo of the future to look and feel much more like the animals actual habitat rather than a zoo enclosure.

They will be assigned a location chosen by rolling the dice on Google Earth. They will then research their location and determine what type of “habitat” they would need to design for their endangered species while encompassing as much of their surrounding location within the habitat.

They will then work with their group to determine the area of space that will be required for their 5-6 species zoo and they will eventually build 3D models of that zoo based on the engineering design process.

Each group of students will create a display for their zoo and present their zoo ideas to visitors of our “Zoo Fair” to be held in the Gym on Tuesday, March 12, from 5:30-7:00.

They will have video advertisements, art, and music to accompany their displays as well as Spanish translations of signage and information.

Social studies classes will kick off our 9 weeks with a look at ancient zoos and how our relationships with animals have changed through the years.

Language Arts classes will research the pros and cons of zoos vs. natural habitats as they compare and contrast the difference. Our Math classes will determine the amount of food needed for their animal as well as the cost for feeding the animals for a day, week, month and year and they will help determine the square footage needed per animal to estimate the overall size of their zoo. The Science classes will look at the plight of the endangered animals and the endangered habits and the Engineering classes will gather all of their new found information to determine how to meet the needs of their endangered animal.

Prior knowledge from science classes: Knowledge of habitats, ecosystems, structural and behavioral adaptions; human influences and natural impacts to ecosystems.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7ah_x3ZfPU
