The camera was invented by the man  Ibn al-Haitham when he was set under house arrest. When he was under house arrest he had decided to study light. His theory was that light reflected off of objects and into the eye but the theory back then most believed was that your eyes emitted the light and that's what was believed to cause sight. He decided to put this to the test by making a pin hole in the wall of a pitch black room and allow light to come into the room. What he saw was an inverted image of what they could see outside.
