For example the increase in lone parent families means that women are now having to become the breadwinners which creates role models for girls. To achieve the breadwinner role, women need well paid jobs which they can get through substantial education and qualifications. The percentage of women in employment has gone from 47% in 1959 to 70% in 2007 as there are many more job opportunities for women, while traditional 'men's' jobs have declined.
Since 1975 the pay gap between men and women has gone from 30% to 17%.

In 1970 she fond that their priorities were 'love, marriage, husbands, children and jobs' in that order and in 1990 they were prioritising careers and independence.
