1962-1998 :  Archivist at the National Archives of France, he has held the position of Executuive Secretary within the ICA. Ha is the author of books and articles on international law on Archives, Archival Policy and european History.

1953-1956:  Dutch National Archivist and campaigner. In 1921 he was appointed Charter Master at the Overijssel State Archives in Zwolle before moving to the Gelderland State Archives three years later. He was, in part, responsible for an exchange treaty between the Netherlands and Prussia covering document transfers on the source principle. He was appointed Honorary President of ICA when he stepped down from the post in 1956.

1959-1964: Head Curator of the Swedish National Archives from 1950 to 1965. He was Chief Editor of the Nordic Science, Arts and Industry Journal from 1947 to 1957. He was also a member of the Swedish Academy and Academy of Gastronomy and was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences.

Norwegian archivist and historian specialising in the Middle Ages, he was the National Archivist of Norway from 1933 to 1960.

1948 – 1950: French Archivist-palaeographer and historian, he was appointed Head of Studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in 1927 (chair of palaeography) and, subsequently, Professor of “bibliography and archives of the history of France” at the École Nationale des Chartes from 1933 to 1941. He was also Director of the Bibliothèque de l'École des Chartes from 1935 to 1948. From 1941 to 1948, he was Director General of the French National Archive.

Rueda was a Mexican lawyer, author, playwright and diplomat who was Director of the General Archives of the Nation and President of the Centro Mexicano de Escritores.  He was also the co-founder of the Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana.

This Italian historian and archivist held a number of prestigious positions in national institutions in the course of his career: Director of the Naples State Archives, the Rome State Archives and the Archives of the Realm. In 1944, he was appointed Archives Commissioner and, from 1947, Inspector General of Archives and a member of the Superior Council for Archives. It was he who was behind the establishment of the National Association of Italian Archives in 1949.

Martin-Chabot was an archivist who worked throughout his career at the French National Archives. He is best-known for his series of essays on the history of the South of France. 

Jenkinson was a British archivist who, in 1906, joined the staff of the Public Record Office (name of the UK National Archives until 2003) which he later headed from 1947 to 1954.  He is best-known for his Manual of Archive Administration, a highly influential work on archival practice published in 1922 that remained the “bible” for archivists in English-speaking countries until the 1960ties.

Czech historian, educator and archivist, who enrolled at the State National Archives College in 1934. As a student, he worked at the National Museum, later joining the Ministry of the Interior, where he remained until 1949.

1953-1956:  Dutch National Archivist and campaigner. 1st Vice-President and, later, President of the International Council on Archives.  Over the years, he was named Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown (Belgium), Grand Officer of the Order of the Oak Crown, Knight of Justice of the Order of Saint John.

2004-2008: Austrian archivist and historian specialising in modern and contemporary history, he entered in the world of archives in 1969, when he joined the Austrian State Archives.  On 1 February 1991, he became Head of the General Archives Department before becoming State Archivist, a position he occupied from 1 July 1994 to 31 December 2011. Holder of a number of awards and distinctions earned in the course of his career.

1976-1979:  After joining the National archives in 1952, he was promoted to the post of Deputy Archivist under Robert BAHMER. He encouraged the engagement of his fellow archivists in the International Council on Archives. In 1972, at the International Congress of Archivists in Moscow, he was elected as one of two Vice-Presidents. At the next congress in Washington, he became President of ICA.

1941-1951: The Second Archivist of the United States, he also served as the 7^th President of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) from 1949 to 1951. It was he who first came up with the idea of establishing an international organization of archivists and described the steps that would need to be taken.

1988-1996: Michael ROPER was Keeper of the Public Records from 1966 to 1993 in London. He also worked in the Public Record Office and other institutions such as the Society of Archivists, the University of London, the International Council on Archives, UNESCO and the British Council.

1996-2000: Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

1988-1992: French archivist and historian, he was Director of the Archives de France from 1975 to 1994 before being appointed President of the French National Library (1994 to 1997). Among his other functions, he was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions and Belles Lettres, Chairman of the Board of the École Normale Supérieure, Board member of the National Audio-Visual Institute.

Since 2018: Acting President of the Archives Association of British Colombia in 2004 and 2005, she was Archivist, Records Manager and Privacy Coordinator at the Archdiocese of Vancouver from 2003 to 2010. Project Officer at the International Records Management Trust from 2010 to 2013 and Digital Records and Transfer Manager at the UK National Archives from 2014. At the ALA-ICA Conference in Mexico in 2017, the ICA Executive Board approved her appointment to the position of ICA Secretary General.

2008 - 2018:  Head of the Archival Inspection from 1994 to 2000, and Director of Planning and Communications at the UK National Archives between 2000 and 2006, he was ICA Secretary General for a period of 9 years 8 months and continues to work with ICA as Strategic Advisor to the Elected Officers.

Since 2014: He became Director General of the National Archives of Australia on 1 January 2012. He was at the helm when the National Archives successfully organized the 2012 ICA Congress in Australia and behind the decision to take a leading role in applying the government’s Digital Transition policy across the system, concentrating on innovative methods to enable the public to contribute to the collection process, regardless their location.

2010-2014:  Entered the Netherlands Ministry for Education, Culture and Science in The Hague in 1998 and held the following positions: Head of the Cultural Policy Office, Director of the Arts Department and Deputy Director for Culture and the Media. Later qualifying as an archivist, he was appointed Netherlands State Archivist in 2009. At the International Council on Archives, he was also interim Vice-President Finance.

1998-2008: His first involvement with ICA was in 1982 where he offered his services as a volunteer. He was the Coordinator of the International Archives weeks in 1984 and Editor-in-Chief of Janus. He also served on the Steering Committees of ICA/SPA and ICA/SMA, and the ICA Executive Board.

2000-2004:  Vice-President of the International Council on Archives from 1997 to 2000. She was Deputy Director General at the State Secretariat for Culture. She is currently Secretary of State for the Environment in the Spanish Climate Change Office.

2008-2010:   In 1999, he became Canada’s 7^th National Archivist. He was elected President of CITRA in 2000, and Vice-President of the International Council on Archives in 2000. He chaired CITRA’s sessions in Iceland (2001), Marseille (2002) and Cape Town (2003). In 2008, he was elected President of ICA, representing the archival community in a number of events from Seoul to Tamarasset via Riga, Trondheim, Oslo, Paris, Austen and Tokyo.

1984-1988: Hertfordshire County Archivist and Secretary. During this period, the International Council on Archives published the Dictionary of Archival Terminology, the brainchild of a Committee of 8 international experts, of which Walne was Chairman.

1968-1972: Director of the Osservatorio Ximeniano, Florence between 1948 and 1972.

1950-1959:  Expert in mediaeval manuscripts, he was a leading participant in the effort to sort, classify and restitute looted archival collections until 1950. On the strength of his experiences in Europe, he was appointed to the Congress Library where he helped coordinate the microfilming of historical documents.

1992-1996:  Journalist, historian, educator and civil servant, he was appointed National Archivist of Canada, a post he occupied from 1985 to 1997. He was President of the Royal Society of Canada from 1999 to 2001 and of the UNESCO Memory of the World programme in 1999. He was the recipient of a number of awards such as the Marie-Tremaine Medal (1973), Officer of the Order of Canada (1991), Jacques Ducharme Prize (1997).

1984-1988:  President of the Federal Archives, Federal Republic of Germany from 1972 to 1989. He was a Records Clerk at the Federal Archives in Koblenz and at the Archives School in Marburg from 1955. In 1980, he was elected Vice-President of the International Council on Archives.

1956-1959:  Italian archivist, historian and genealogist and Director of the Naples State Archives (Archivio di Stato di Napoli).  Filangieri campaigned and lobbied extensively to prevent the dismantling of major family archives and encourage their protection, accessibility and acquisition.

1950-1953: Head of the Naval Archives and Library Department from 1919 to 1944, he was appointed Director of the Archives de France in 1948. Under his leadership, the premises of the National Archives were extended with State procurement of several of the building making up the Hotel de Soubise. He also commissioned the construction of new repositories. In 1933 he was awarded the Prix Renaudot for his work “Le roi dort”.

French Archivist-palaeographer and historian, he was appointed General Director of the Archives de France by Minister Jérôme CARCOPINO in 1941, a position he occupied until 1948. He was the co-founder of the International Committee for Palaeography in 1953, the driving force behind the “Catalogue of dated manuscripts” and the President of the Historical and Scientific Works Committee (CTHS) from 1960 to 1982.

1980-1984: Alfred W. MABBS (Freddy), joined the National Archives in London in 1938.

1979-1980: Oscar GAUYE was the Director general of the Swiss Federal Archives (in 1984).

1972-1976: Director General of Archives at the Council of Ministers of the USSR 

1968-1972: Director General of the Archives and Libraries of Spain 

1964-1968: Belgian historian and archivist, who joined the Belgian State Archives in 1928, where he worked in the War Archives Department. On 22 November 1959, he was appointed General Government Archivist, where his main task was the enforce the Archives Act of 24 June 1955. Internationally, he held the positions of ICA President and Chairman of the Executive Board.

1972-1984: General State Archivist of the Kingdom of Belgium, in 1948, he was appointed Archivist in the State Archives in Ghent. Twenty years later, he was promoted to General Archivist, a post he held until his retirement in 1987.

1964-1968: Third Archivist of the United States from 1948 until his resignation in 1965. It was during this period that the National Archives published “The Archivist's Code”, the first code of ethics for the archival profession. He was a founder member of the Society for American Archivists and its President from 1953 to 1954. He also served as the Western Hemisphere Vice-President of the International Council on Archives.

1959-1964: Fourth Archivist of the United States, he entered the National Archives in 1936. Appointed acting Archivist in 1965, he was confirmed as Official Archivist on 16 January 1966. He headed the National Archives and Records Service and directed the offices of the Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower Presidential Libraries. In 1961 and 1962 he was President of the Society of American Archivists (SAA), and, in 1970, the recipient of the North Dakota Rough Rider Award.
