"And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides."

P1 Response
In the quoted passage above, Elie is referring to the idea that once human beings face something that has any sort of pain and suffering, we don't just let it happen, nor do we stay who we are. Moreover, we cannot treat everyone with love after they have inflicted some type of pain, especially if they are on the brink of taking ones life away.

And the spectators observed the emaciated creatures ready to kill for a crust of bread."

P2 Response
In the quoted passage above, Elie is talking about how people would do anything just for food, and for a small amount of food, as they all knew that if they didn't get something in their system they would die of starvation. In the passage, I also noticed how Elie referred to the humans as emaciated creatures, meaning that they are something that is not human, at all.

Without love or mercy."

P3 Response
This shows how someone can lose their human traits through their religious beliefs. Elie had been Jewish his entire life, and still is to this day, but he had lost some of his faith when he had faced death, and had somewhat lost his humanity as he wasn't truly living his ideal life. Overall, love had played a huge role in Elie's life and he had lost that when he faced what he thought would be the last moments of his life.

They snatched by bread...and they hit me...again...I can't stand anymore son..."

P4 Response
In the quoted passage above, Elie's father is talking to him, after getting beaten by his neighbors, his roommates. This shows the significance of the hatred people gain for others when pain is being inflicted on them. Once someone gets hurt, mentally or physically, they feel the need to take that pain and inflict it on someone else for their own survival, especially in the situation of the holocaust.

No human would ever do that in today's world, but now that this young boy is facing death, he has a new perspective, as he wants to survive the holocaust and grow on his own.

Within the story of Night, Elie had been transforming throughout the story, losing his faith in his religion, his personality, and his overall love for others. All of this made Elie inhumane, making him change his lifestyle, to what nobody could imagine and what nobody would ever want. He made sacrifices, away from his father, away from his family. In the end, Elie had grown positively more than he did negatively, as although he became inhumane throughout his journey at Auschwitz. Overall, he regained his humanity and taught other people about what the holocaust did to him and how it put himself as a human being on a roller coaster ride within his actions, and emotions.

What I learned from the book and my theme was that there were many things that happened within the holocaust, and it is truly because of the indifference and inhumanity that all of the countries and humans around the world endured. I learned that there are evil people in this world, and sometimes, if facing the ultimate worst, you must fight inhumanity with inhumanity, as Elie Wiesel did. Inhumanity seems bad, but once you endure something bad that you could never imagine, sometimes being what some would think is bad, is the good thing. Never stop fighting for your life, as we only live once. At some point, we are all gonna die. Of course, love is the answer, but fear should never stop us from living.

Our responsibility against injustice is to fight indifference, and not act in indifference, by protecting our brothers and sisters around the world, acting as we are all one. Although we are separated by borders, we are all related in some way and we cannot let politics get in our way of letting all human beings life their life, whether it is through God or through whatever you believe in. Acting as one unit can change the world and change indifference, as indifference was the cause for the extent the holocaust got to.
