Influenza a was discovered by J.S. Koen who study the disease in pigs. The major flu pandemics of modern history have all been caused by Influenza A. These included the pandemics of 1918 (Spanish flu), 1957 (Asian flu), 1968 (Hong Kong flu), and 2009 (Swine flu). It is also responsible for three outbreaks on a smaller scale in in 1947, 1976, and 1977.

Source:
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/12/1/05-1254_article
