ECS 460 01 Fall 2020- Participating in Reflective Dialogue by Annie White

Consider this as you look at the photo. What do you think might be the toddlers' thinking within such play? Play around with this and see if you can name what it is that they might be wondering about or trying to figure out. Post what you might offer the group of toddlers, so that they might continue to go deeper in exploring their ideas. I want to hear you begin to formulate some possible planning questions that you might use to plan the "next steps" in the curriculum. The planning question frames the experience as an open-ended investigation, i.e. “What might happen if I place ____ in the play space?” or ‘How will the toddlers respond when they encounter ___ in the play space?” or, “In what ways will the toddlers respond if I add ___ to the daily routines?”

Vanessa G, Vanessa C, Elisabet, Maritza
The child is leaning over lifting up a log looking on the ground. it looks like she is looking for infecting and inspecting what is under. We could give the child a piece of paper and marker to draw what they see under the log. Give them a magnifying glass to get a closer view. Show them real pictures of insects to compare what they saw.
Questions to ask:
what do you think will be under there?
what kind of insects do you think we will find?
Do you think there will be insects under the other logs?
What else can we use to look closely?

Mads Harman
Mayra Enriques
Yuritzy Bravo
Edvin Nunez
Wendy Samaan
We think the child in the photo might be looking for bugs when pulling up the wood piece. We think the child is wondering "what could be under here?". We would offer the child lessons about life cycles of bugs and other small creatures. Also bringing the bugs into the classroom for the children to observe. Also letting the children bring in leaves, dirt and other outside items into a sensory bin to discover different textures. Teaching children how to care for insects would also be an appropriate activity for this child. Taking children on a nature walk to find items they find interesting out on their walk. The children could share their items and why they picked that item.

We talked about maybe the child is interested in bugs. As teachers we can provide opportunities for the child to look under other rocks too. Maybe they will find different types of bugs, and then find worms and allow them to dig the worms, use a magnifier to look closely.
The teacher can also organize a Scavenger hunt where the child can find a bug, a leaf. The child's interest can be used to build both a theme based curriculum and a theme based curriculum. Opportunity to explore, and provide resources for the children to enhance what they are already interested in.

We think she is lifting the wood to look in the dirt to see what is there. What led her to look under the rock? How did this area get wet? What type of creatures does she see? What is she trying to investigate? Is she going to look under each piece of wood? Are they all similar?
For a next step, we could give the kids magnifying glasses to look and explain what they see. We could also bring in things like ant farms so the kids could look in the classroom as well.
