This was to make sure that people would obey him and not riot or cause problems. This information I knew, however, the extent Hitler went to make sure this happened shocked me. Originally, Hitler swore loyalty to the German government and country, however once he was Fuhrer the allegiance of the country must be towards him. The Nazis burned any book that wasn't German, and they tried to burn many books that went against their philosophies. This insane philosophy of ridding the country of anything that wasn't aligned with the Nazi beliefs is shocking and I am baffled that the German people allowed Hitler to do this. Furthermore, the German opinion on Hitler was incredibly high and they viewed him almost like a god. This article talks about the decree “For the Defense against Malicious Attacks against the Government.” It states that if anyone spoke ill of the government, or it caused harm towards the government, that individual can go to jail for 3 months-2 years (or more). The part that was shocking to me was the story that came after. The story was of a slightly drunk father who came home and complained about the government. He says he can't believe what the government has come to and speaks very ill of the situation. After listening to this, his son threatened to report his father. This was so shocking to me since they are family. His own son was willing to report his father and possibly send him to a concentration camp. The amount of power that the Nazis had truly reflects in this story. Slowly, the Nazi's started targeting homosexuals and attacking them for no reason. There was a provision enacted that made all homosexual acts a crime in 1871. The Nazi's believed that homosexuals were an abomination among the men and were not able to fit into the master race. Interestingly, they treated gay men and lesbian women different. They had the mindset of 'women are weak' and thought that although a woman is lesbian, we can still force her to have children and do whatever we want. All of this information was so interesting for me to learn about. The mindset of the Nazi's is just so interesting to learn about. I feel curious and intrigued as to why homosexuals have always been targeted. Although, I can see the other side to that conversation. My reaction while reading was a known shock that I always feel when learning about the holocaust. The Germans were erasing their history, but the only thing that mattered to them was pleasing their leader. It was crazy to see how unfazed the Germans were when Hitler and the Nazis would tell everyone to do unheard of things such as burn any books that aren't German and call Hitler the Fuhrer. While the Germans thought this was just promoting their love for their country and their new leader, they did not realize how messed up the things they were doing were. I am baffled as to why Germans were not scared or felt threatened when Hitler changed the pledge of allegiance to basically say they praise Hitler and only Hitler. The Nazis found the going to the center of German Academia, Frankfurt, would be best for allowing students to follow the "German idea" of being good citizen. Frankfurt was the biggest liberal colleges there and proving Nazi Dirven ideas of lack of indipendence and democracy will make students perfect models within the Nazi's eyes and would help propaganda be easier to intake. Departments for "racially pure" science were instilled. Frankfurt was known for it's well rounded scientists and programs; so when a Nobel prize winning scientist would be promoting Nazi ideas, many would hop on the bandwagon of following their teachings. 
Germans were cutting off Jewish teachers and were expelling them on March 15th, and it would play into Nazi values and belifs. 

My impression on all of this was scared, its an impending thought that an entire government could control a nation through schooling and how that is a very possible thing for people even today. Before, the pledge was patriotic by swearing loyalty to the Constitution and to Germany. This seemed very normal and democratic to me. But once I read Hitler's pledge, I was so surprised. He changed the pledge to have soldiers swear loyalty to him, and he referred to himself almost like a God. The Nazi party went to Frankfurt university since it was the most liberal school and prided itself on scholarships, so they can take over German Academia. They also went there and kicked out all Jewish teachers. The last reason was because there was a biochemist-physiologist of Nobel-Prize caliber who was in that university. Having this kind of power lets the Nazis control what the children will learn. this gives the Nazis more control as to how they want to shape the youth. This shows how well the Nazis thought out how to take over.
Spying on Family and Friends:
No one was safe from the Nazi's because even if their own family talks bad about the Nazi's they could be arrested by their own family. People who were part of the Nazis were so loyal that they would not let their own family members talk bad. If someone said anything against the Nazis they would be arrested. This shows how the Nazi party became more important to anyone who was part of it than their own family.
Shaping Public Opinion:
The Nazis needed a large public image to get people to vote for them. They needed to stay relevant, so they used their power to stay in the public eye. They used propaganda to gain more publicity. They even created new festivals in order to gain support from the German people. This is the way the Nazis gained so much support for their party.

The article I read told about how when the Nazi party began running for office,  they did not get the majority of the votes. The first time, they received 37 percent of votes and then 44 percent of votes. The article tells that the Nazis decided to use propaganda in order to gain more of the votes. The propaganda that the Nazi party used to gain votes shocked me. They made Hitler's birthday a celebratory holiday, and published Newspapers and books stating how the Nazi party was best. The use of propaganda to gain votes bothered me because people didn't vote for the Nazis originally because they didn't agree with them, and after the propaganda, they are turning to them because they only get to read positive things about the party due to censorship of the media. 

Controlling the Universities and Spying of Family and Friends:
I was also shocked by the stories in these stories. I felt upset that the Nazi party was allowed to interfere with education. After reading the article I was seeing a parten the Nazi often took. They strike fear in the citizen, were manipulated, and twisted everything around in order to gain control.  Nazi tried to get the people on their side and used propaganda validate their message. They try to indoctrinate students, turned neighbors and family against each other. They did everything possible to make the citizen turn against each other. I thoght that it was wrong to imprision someone just for what they do is wrong. The article says that Germans didn't tolerate homosexuals and they were a target for disscrimination just like the Jews. There was even an article in the German Government says that homosexual acts were crimes. When the Nazis came to power they enforced this rule stronger. There was even one person who was arrested and tortured including all of his friends. President Paul von Hindenburg wrote a letter to Hitler questioning how it was fair that the Jewish veterans were forcibly left of leave just because they were Jewish. What was concerning though, was that Hitler backed up his reasoning by using the Jewish People as a scapegoat. He said that Jews were the reason Germans were not getting jobs, and with this new law in order Germans would fill those spots. However, he made an exception and provided security for those who served in the army.
