Discussion "The Man Who Loved Flowers" Period 1 by Mirela Kucinic

Norma has been dead for ten years but the young man thinks he will "find her ...someday soon". In your opinion, who is Norma? What could have possibly happened between Norma and the young man? Why is he murdering women while trying to find Norma? What possible theories explain his behaviour?

The young man is murdering women because he is reliving the same day from 10 years ago. During that day the young man killed Norma, causing him to repress his memory of that day. This is why he thinks that Norma is still out there and alive.

Murdering women can also explain how he thinks and that he may have a split personality. One personality is in the same day as 10 years ago, the other is the personality that knows hes wrong and that Norma is not alive and out there.

The young man may have a stronger ID than super ego, meaning that his ego is unbalanced. When he kills his Id is making the decisions, his super ego not in control. After killing his 6th victim, he has a bounce in his step, meaning that he does not know that he just killed and just pretended that it never happened. This proves that his ego is unbalanced as it shows that he has a weak super ego an has a strong Id, with an unbalanced ego.

There is so many images of birth in the story because of the time of season and to emphasize that nothing is wrong. Birth is the opposite of death, something that the young man does but is not aware of it, killing women. Stephen king is trying to show in the story that nothing is wrong and that the young man is not the hammer murderer.

In the young mans past, he may have had a rough childhood. He may hate the mention or see birth around him because of what his parents, his mom did to him. Birth is represents pure, something that the young man is not, something that he may want to be but can not. Then once he sees birth or purity around him he becomes uneasy and his shadow self stars to come out and his murderous side, the hammer murderer comes out

From a psychoanalytical lens, the hammer represents power and strength. It shows that the Id is stronger as a hammer to many represents danger and a weapon. It is a symbol that is mean to show someone over powering someone over another. The hammer also shows that the young man has a blue beard complex. This is because he kills women, he does not know it but he may think that women are weaker, that is why he uses a hammer.
