How do you see music and gender intersecting in the music that you listen to regularly? How are representations of femininity and masculinity constructed through song (and music video)? What do these songs, images, and critical interpretations say about how music and gender work in our contemporary world? How and why do these images matter to you? Please reference 1-2 popular academic articles that speak to your music/artist along with 1-2 songs to construct your arguments.

Music and gender intersect in music all the time and I hear it regularly. Women are usually hyper-sexualized in order to "make it" in the music industry. Women also use their sexuality to their benefit, but unfortunately, people can take advantage. I believe that the music industry has become more and more inclusive, however, giant steps still need to be take in order to achieve full equality and respect. Women in music isn't frowned upon as it was when Nannerl Mozart was alive.

Particularly in the rap industry, men tend to dominate. In the research article, Gender and Sexuality Representations in Hip Hop Music, by Dr. Tyree, she analyzes different hip hop lyrics. She wants to observe how rappers feel toward gender and sexuality both men and women rappers alike. I think this goes to show that music expresses how people feel about particular issues and people. Although more female rappers are appearing it's still limited and hard to be excepted in this competitive field.

popglitz.com

In the hip hop/ rap genre, many of the songs deal with demonizing women and being hyper masculine. Kendrick Lamar sort of goes against these ideals. In his album To Pimp a Butterfly he talks about having suicidal thought and other issues such as depression that mainstream rappers tend to avoid.

www.hdwalle.com

Kesha has become one of the many faces of women empowerment especially in the case of her music producer. She claims Dr. Luke was guilty of sexual harassment, gender violence, civil harassment, and many other things. She is one of many stories of gender inequality and sexual harassment in the music/ entertainment industry. She has channeled her past experiences into her newer songs like her song "Women."

I really like this music video because it displays what some women feel like in their daily lives, but with a sort of comedic twist. The song empowers women to do what they want despite how men or society put them down.
