1. I can't recall any moments of hetero normative bias. However, some examples are like when your friends assume that you have a mom and dad just like them, in reality you could have 2 moms or 2 dads. Therefore, the friends stop hanging out with you.

2. Another example is when a coworker tells another employee that's a woman and said "your husband has good taste for that wedding ring". In this case, the woman can be married to a same gender person. When the coworker figures out that she's married to another woman, she can avoid her.

3. Lastly, parents trying to make their child avoid being friends with heterosexual kids. For example, a child who can be gay/lesbian.

1. (family) Hetero-normative bias is first seen with family members. Most families will push “their” norm onto to their children from the day they are born. When choosing clothes for a baby they will always choose the colors they will wear based on gender. A girl baby must wear pink and have all pink accessories. A boy baby must have all shades of “manly”
colors like blue, green or brown. Gender has a strict interpretation for some.
2. (friends) Many younger generations use different slang or demeaning terms that they do not know the origin of or harm they are causing. It is part of the hetero- normative bias to say anything that is “gay” is negative. When, being homosexual should not be seen as a negative thing. The Homophobia society has created these negative connotations of homo sexual individuals.
3.(Advertisement) Heterosexual couples are almost always chosen to represent the typical American household. However, that is not the norm for all the families. A women is shown in the kitchen doing the house work & the man is either relaxing in the living room or getting home from work. Commercials never show a homo sexual couple with a family of kids. This is telling society that being heterosexual is the accepted norm.

1. Heteronormative bias in my family can not be seen, since my family respects all people regardless of their sexual orientation. Yet, it is quite possible that some heteroseuxal parents and siblings would not be able to process or accept non-heterosexuality.

2. In my friend groups or acquaintances, there were times when people pick up on people with different sexual orientation. For instance, people have normalized the word "gay" to describe something that is not cool or accepted in the society. It has become a prevalent word and it is very toxic and perpetuating a false meaning of its word's origin. This confirmation bias has to be stopped, and people have to be mindful when using derogatory terms such as "gay".

3.Media portrays both the positive and negative views on different sexual orientations. There are some TV shows or youtube channels promoting people from all backgrounds or quite frankly worshipping people who are different from haterosexual male or females. On the other hand, there are media that perpetuates absolutely nasty remarks on them, and portray them as someone that is exotic and peculiar but in a very offensive way. This can be seen in comedy, news outlet, and memes.

1. Treatment of homosexuality as "a phase":
My friend recently came out to me, and when I asked her if her parents knew about it, she denied saying that they won't understand and will try to ignore it by calling it "a phase." This is one of the most common examples of heteronormativity bias. The belief that any sexual identity (especially homosexuality and bisexuality) is "just a phase" and that the individual will grow out of it and live a heterosexual life. No one is going to insist that heterosexuality is just a phase. You won't be asked to prove your straightness by your romantic or sexual history.
2. Media representation of heterosexual couples:
I watch many movies during my free time, and heterosexual couples are prevalent in mainstream media—from commercials to romantic comedies. This prevalence reinforces heterosexuality as a social standard for sexual expression.

1)There are undoubtedly many cases people would assume someone is straight or cisgender by default and I have seen this one too many times. It’s also part of my culture for elderly people to ask young people if they “have a boyfriend" to girls and "do you have a girlfriend" to girls every time they see them after a while. I have experienced this and witnessed this a lot of times among my family and friends.

2) Children who are made to like certain things because of how society stereotyped it, such as the color pink and blue, or simple toys such as cooking toys or train/car toys. I usually volunteer at my mother’s work (international school), so I have seen how parents enforce such stereotypes to their children.

3) Most of the time, even LGBT couples (wlw or mlm couples, specifically) are always thought of in a heteronormative way such as “who is the guy in the relationship” or “who is the female in the relationship”. I notice these stereotypes in the media mostly, and when people talk about these couples they tend to specify who is the female or male depending on their personalities or looks.

In Japan, same-sex couples are not allowed to marry, so I think this law is affecting people's hetero-normative bias.
When it comes to makeup, there are many people who think that only women wear makeup, so when men wear makeup, they are considered to be feminine and discriminated against.
I remember that one of my best friend told to me about how harsh treatment toward boys in one of a particular Asian countries. He told me when you starts going to elementary school, your life would change depending on how much study will you do. If you go to high level university, your life will be stable and affluent. On the other hand, if you go not famous university, your life is going to be harsh. Why only boys treated like that, because boys are breadwinner and girls' role is house working. I feel so confused and wonder the purpose of going to university and why the role is distinguished between girls and boys. I believe Boys can undertake house working and Girls can be breadwinner.

When I joined the the U.S military, they had this rule regarding heteror-normative bias, it was known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" this rule prohibited discrimination or harassment of service members who were of gay/lesbian and or orientation. This ruled allowed service members to join and to serve their country with out being discriminated or harassed. Being in the military, there were may good soldiers, sailors, airmen, who were open about their sexual orientation and because the lax restriction now on the rules, these members can now be open and serve their country without any problems.
I served with military members who identified themselves who considered to be of LGBT. They are amazing people and they are like everyone, like you, like me. I had co-workers who identified under LGBT community, I never wanted to be closed minded so instead of assuming gender or role, I've always took the time to learn and to understand.
