Metacognition is thinking about thinking. It is knowing what we know or do not know, monitoring the outcomes of our work, setting goals, and planning ahead. 
Metacognition develops slowly throughout childhood and into adolescence. 
Children with good metacognitive skills are self-directed learners who are able to self-evaluate and try new strategies when needed. 
People with better metacognition have higher academic achievement and are more successful.

Studies have found that children as young as 3 can be involved in developing their portfolio. One way to do this is to make it a part of the classroom routine, to set aside portfolio time. Teachers can meet with individual or small groups of children to discuss their work and choose items to include. 

There are three strategies for supporting children's selection of portfolio pieces and promoting cognition.
1)Model and think aloud-
The teacher takes the lead and models her thinking process by making comments on the student's work.
2)Conference and coconstruct-
The teacher asks questions about the work and elaborates on the student's ideas through prompts and leading questions. 
3)Independent self-assessment and articulation of thinking about thinking-
The child takes the lead, and the teacher builds on his thinking with comments and questions.
