Most Rhinos live in Africa. Over the last 20 years, number of rhinos have dropped rapidly: there are now fewer than 10,000in the whole world, and the number is still falling. The main threat to rhinos is from poachers, who hunt them for their 'horns', which are in fact made of stiff hair. The horns are sold in the Middle East, where they are used to make dagger handles, amd also in the Far East, where they are used in medicvines and aphrodisiacs.

Borneo elephant. Nowdays, there are only a handful of Borneo's endemic elephants left. In Indonesia, it is estimated that there are only 30 to 80 of them left. Of these, 5-20 are thought to be male elephants. This is due to the rampant human activities that cause habitat shrinkage and disturbance. The development of oil palm plantations and industrial timber estates is thought to have further narrowed the elephant's habitat, making it difficult for the animal to find food.

African elephants living in forests and savannas are increasingly in danger of extinction. This is based on the latest Red List of the world's most threatened species. The IUCN cites data showing that populations of African savannah elephants found in a wide range of habitats have fallen by at least 60 percent over the last 50 years while numbers of forest elephants - found mostly in Central Africa - have fallen. 86 percent for 31 years. Combined, there are only about 415,000 African elephants left.
"This means that it is only one step away from extinction in the wild," said Oberle.

The new assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) published last Thursday underscores the continuing pressure faced by two species of African elephant, which are now listed as "critically endangered" or "endangered".In the last five years on the black market around Samburu National Park the price of elephant ivory has doubled. This is proven by an international research team. Director of the organization Environmental Investigation Agency, Allan Thornton said the price increase was due to the huge demand from China. "For China's newly rich, ivory jewelery is a status symbol," he added. Poaching is a major problem throughout the African continent. It is estimated that 25,000 elephants were slaughtered by poachers last year.

Even though the ivory trade has been banned since 1989. When the price of ivory fell, poaching had decreased. But ivory prices have skyrocketed again, especially in Asia.Alternating governments and various efforts have been made to suppress various crimes at the border, but it seems that these various programs and strategies have not been able to overcome the various vulnerabilities of the border area. Kayan Mentarang National Park is very important because it is a unitary area of primary forest and old secondary forest which is the largest and still remains in Kalimantan and throughout Southeast Asia.

The Mahakam dolphin lives in the Mahakam River, East Kalimantan and the Kapuas River, West Kalimantan. This fish is also often called the Indonesian dolphin because its shape is similar to a dolphin. Unfortunately the population of these animals is getting smaller every year. Based on a study conducted by the RASI Conservation Foundation from 1999, the Mahakam dolphin population is estimated to be less than 90 individuals. The cause of the scarcity of this fish is due to human activity which is too noisy, so the Mahakam Pesut fish migrates. However, the purpose of their migration is actually upstream, where this direction is very close to mining activities. There are also many Mahakam dolphins that have died as a result of being entangled in fishing nets and also due to unfriendly fishing methods, namely by electrocution.

In 2002, the International Union for Conservation of Nature classified this forest species as endangered due to an estimated population decline of more than 20% by 2020 due to habitat loss. The illegal trade in wildlife is a widespread practice.

Although Kalimantan has 25 wildlife reserves, only three actually exist, the others are only proposed. The Bali starling is found only in the western forests of Bali Island and is endemic to Indonesia. It is also the only species endemic to Bali and in 1991 was named the faunal emblem of Bali Province. When it was first discovered in 1912, the Jalak Bali was recorded at 900. However, calculations in the 1990s, there were only about 50 left in the wild. Not only poaching, ecosystem damage due to human actions is also one of the factors in the decline of the Jalak Bali population in the wild. The number of Bali Starling populations in the wild is still very small, an inventory in 2008 stated that there were only 30 Bali Starling in the wild at that time. The cause of the rare Bali Starling is because many humans catch it because the price of this bird is quite fantastic. One Jalak Bali currently has a price of up to tens of millions of rupiah, as a result the population continues to decrease until it is endangered. Even in 2008, the population of this bird was said to be only 30 birds left throughout Indonesia. In addition to human activities, the reduction in habitat area due to illegal logging has caused Jalak Bali to experience scarcity. The Bali starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) is a medium-sized songbird, approximately 25 cm long, from the Sturnidae tribe.

Semar bag Having a shape like a bag, Nepenthaceae plants are better known as semar bags. This plant is only found in several areas in West Kalimantan which makes it an endemic plant. With its unique shape, the semar bag has the potential to be a beautiful ornamental plant. On the other hand, the growth of pitcher plants is relatively slow. With the existence of poaching and destruction of native habitat, one of which is caused by forest fires, this has reduced the population of the semar bag and its existence is threatened. According to Lipi, the best way to save the Nepenthes is to carry out ex-situ conservation or outside their natural habitat and perform tissue culture.

Based on the monitoring results of the Komodo dragon population by the Komodo National Park Office and the Komodo Survival Program (KSP), the Komodo dragon has fluctuated over the last five years with a relatively stable trend of 2,400 to 3,000 individuals. The Komodo dragon has been threatened with extinction in recent years because of its increasingly rare species. If according to USA Today, one of the main causes of the extinction of the Komodo dragon is due to global warming. Komodo is also a protected animal. To protect it, a National Park was created with the aim of preserving Komodo dragons. Komodo dragons grow to lengths of up to 3 meters (10 feet), for a weight of around 135 kilograms.

The clearing of forest land in Java in the early 1800s to become plantations disturbed the habitat of the Javanese tiger, which then led to conflict between tigers and humans. Due to the many conflicts between the Javanese tigers and humans, their hunting has become increasingly massive. Until the early 1940s, the population of Javan tigers was estimated to be only 200-300 individuals and continued to decline after that. In the 1950s, it was estimated that there were only 25 Javan tigers left. The International Union for Conservation of Nature officially announced that the last Javan tiger was in Meru Betiri National Park, East Java in 1976. After that the tiger disappeared and was finally declared extinct in the early 1980s. Currently it is occasionally reported to be seen in mountainous forests on the island of Java, however its presence cannot be verified yet.

The main culprit behind their decline is the influx of gray squirrels from America. There are three main reasons why gray is a threat, namely:
1. Gray squirrels carry a disease (Parapox virus) that does not appear to affect their health but often kills red squirrels.
2. The gray squirrel is more likely to eat green acorns, so it will destroy the food source before it ripens and the red squirrel can take advantage of it.
3. When red squirrels are suppressed, they will not breed as often.
The other biggest factor in their decline has been forest loss over the last century, but road traffic and predators are also threats.

The red panda (Ailurus Fulgens) is one of the endangered species that less than 10,000 individuals. The lenght of the red panda is two feet and lives in the temperate forest. Red pandas live in the Eastern Himalayas in places like China, Nepal, and Bhutan. They spend most of their time in trees. Their semi-retractable claws help them move easily from branch to branch. The red panda is slightly larger than a domestic cat with a bear-like body and thick russet fur. The belly and limbs are black, and there are white markings on the side of the head and above its small eyes. Red pandas are very skillful and acrobatic animals that predominantly stay in trees. Almost 50% of the red panda’s habitat is in the Eastern Himalayas. They use their long, bushy tails for balance and to cover themselves in winter, presumably for warmth. Primarily an herbivore, the name panda is said to come from the Nepali word ‘ponya,’ which means bamboo or plant eating animal.

Some 60,000 koalas were "killed, injured or affected in some way" by the fires, according to a report commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund Australia. They are found in the wild in the southeast and eastern sides of Australia — in coastal Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. In 2023 the koala is now extinct in 47 electorates, and the remaining populations of others can be as small as just five to 10 koalas.

The dingo (Canis lupus dingo) is an ancient lineage of dog. The dingo is a medium-sized canine that possesses a lean, averaging 44 cm- 63 cm at the shoulder, and weighing 13 kg– 23 kg. Males are usually larger and heavier than females. Hardy body adapted for speed, agility, and stamina. The dingo's three main coat colourations are light ginger or tan, black and tan, or creamy white. The skull is wedge-shaped and appears large in proportion to the body. The dingo is closely related to the New Guinea singing dog.
The dingo is an apex predator contributing to the control of many feral species that threaten Australia’s wildlife and play a very important role within the environment. They are highly adaptable animals being able to survive in most habitats as long as water is available. The dingo was a highly valued companion to the Aboriginal people who used them for warmth at night, hunting companions and even guard dogs.
Dingoes are classified as being a vulnerable group, reports the organization the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. They are considered to be endangered. The vulnerable classification is a result of their dropping population, largely due to breeding with domestic canines. While this interbreeding is common, dingoes are still plentiful in the wilds of Australia and in Asian parts of their geographic scope. It's often difficult to evaluate how many pure specimens are out there, however, as many of the mixed individuals look the same. Breeding with domestic canines isn't the only risk to the continued strength of dingoes in the wild. They are sometimes hunted by humans for their scalps and their skin. Some people in the United States and Australia breed dingoes for the pet trade. Dingoes are thought of as nuisances in some parts of their stomping grounds, and therefore occasionally face regulation methods. All of these factors might contribute to the falling numbers of dingoes out in nature.

The physical appearance of a pangolin is marked by large, hardened, overlapping, plate-like scales, which are soft on newborn pangolins, but harden as the animal matures. They are made of keratin, the same material from which human fingernails and tetrapod claws are made, and are structurally and compositionally very different from the scales of reptiles. The pangolin's scaled body is comparable in appearance to a pine cone. It can curl up into a ball when threatened, with its overlapping scales acting as armor, while it protects its face by tucking it under its tail. The scales are sharp, providing extra defense from predators.

Pangolins can emit a noxious-smelling chemical from glands near the anus, similar to the spray of a skunk. They have short legs, with sharp claws which they use for burrowing into ant and termite mounds and for climbing.

The tongues of pangolins are extremely long, and like those of the giant anteater and the tube-lipped nectar bat, the root of the tongue is not attached to the hyoid bone, but is in the thorax between the sternum and the trachea. Large pangolins can extend their tongues as much as 40 cm (16 in), with a diameter of only about 0.5 cm (1⁄5 in).

The Javan Green Peacock (Pavo muticus Linnaeus, 1766) is a rare bird whose distribution is currently only on the island of Java, one of which is in Ujung Kulon National Park. The scarcity is due to the large number of wildlife poaching, land conversion, and habitat destruction. This has caused considerable pressure on the life of the Javan Green Peacock, both in terms of population and habitat. As for the efforts of the Javanese Green Peacock to survive by using strategic ecological populations. This research was conducted to overcome the drastic decline in the Javan Green Peafowl population by conducting habitat development and increasing surveillance. The research methods used included observing observations, observing observations, vegetation analysis, analyzing habitat use which were then analyzed by the four of them. The results of this study were that the Cidaon Grazing Field had fulfilled the habitat needs of the Javan Green Peacock with a population of 20 individuals with an inverted age difference and a male sex ratio of 1:3 female.

Facts about whale sharks that many people may not know, one of which is the risk of eating plastic waste in the sea.

Processed from the WWF Indonesia Foundation's Twitter account, Thursday (1/9/2022), the whale shark is the largest fish species in the world, with habitats that stretch from tropical to subtropical waters.

Whale sharks have 2,900 tiny teeth around their eyeballs that serve as protection from mechanical injury.

Whale shark "homeboy"

Juvenile whale sharks are often called the true "kids of the house," as they roam the same area for long periods of the year.

The age of whale sharks can be estimated

Previously, scientists had tried to determine how old this whale shark was. However, researchers around the world have not been able to find out.

As a result of a cold war-era nuclear explosion, scientists can reliably estimate the age of whale sharks, with the oldest recorded specimens dating back 50 years.

Whale sharks in Indonesia are estimated to be at risk of eating up to 137 plastic waste per hour

When the whale shark was looking for food on the surface, several individuals died and some plastic waste was found in the whale shark's stomach.

After studying plastic abundance at 3 sites across the country, researchers concluded that whale sharks in Indonesia can eat up to 137 pieces of marine plastic per hour.

Whale sharks have habitat near the surface or the water column

causes of scarcity of whale sharks As reported by the Independent, Tuesday (10/5/2022) the number of whale sharks has decreased in recent years in many aquatic locations in the world. However, the cause of the decline itself is still not known with certainty.

On the other hand, experts say that these endangered animals spend more time on the surface of the water and congregate in coastal areas. So, getting hit by a large ship can cause the death of a shark. Even so, there is no way to monitor the threat from these shipping activities.

This orchid typically grows in lowland places on ancient trees, next to beaches, in lowland swamps that get fairly hot, close to rivers, and in damp woodlands. The black orchid is a carrier of the uncommon black trait, which is where plant breeding scientists get the black color they need to make new hybrids with various appealing flower hues.
The tubers have a shiny surface and a bright green color, which makes them highly eye-catching. Two stiff leaves that resemble coconut shell wrappers develop in each tuber. The final arrangement of two leaves and tubers resembles a fish. This orchid has a highly unique appearance due to the flower stalks that hang down in a regular pattern. Naturally, this plant is one of the species most prized by orchid collectors, which is one of the causes of the growing shortage of black orchid germplasm in its native environment. In Kalimantan, the black orchid is a treasured but poorly preserved forest resource.
The habitat and quantity of black orchids that grow in nature are declining along with numerous human activities that result in a reduction in forest area. Black orchids like small, disappearing black jewels that are tucked away in Kalimantan's dense forest. Since that Malaysia, our neighbor, too has a comparable flora, we do not want her to claim this natural wealth as she has done with adan rice.

Whale sharks are said to be going in an extinction by scientists. They often swim in the deep ocean, so it's hard to find them on the surface. The name whale sharks doesn't indicate that it's a whale. Whale sharks are considered as a shark.

The causes of their extinction are large shipping vessels. That's the main reason of their extinction. Consumption of seafood which are the food for the whale sharks themselves.

Javanese tiger (Panthera tigris Sondaica (Temminck, 1844)).

Currently, what remains in Indonesia is the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris Sumatrae (Temminck, 1844)). It is estimated that currently the population is only around 400-500 individuals in the forests of Sumatra (national parks).

The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), also known as the sagehen, is the largest grouse (a type of bird) in North America. Its range is sagebrush country in the western United States and southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada. It was known as simply the sage grouse until the Gunnison sage-grouse was recognized as a separate species in 2000. The Mono Basin population of sage grouse may also be distinct.

Population,

Their historic range spanned 16 American states and Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan in Canada. Between 1988 and 2012, the Canadian population declined by 98%. By 2012, they were extirpated from British Columbia and left with only remnant populations in Alberta with 40 to 60 adult birds, and in Saskatchewan with only 55 to 80 adult birds. By 2013, sage grouse were also extirpated from five U.S. states. In 2013, the Canadian Governor in Council on behalf of the Minister of the Environment, under the Species at Risk Act, annexed an emergency order for the protection of the greater sage-grouse.

Sage grouse habitat

Sagebrush plains; also foothills and mountain slopes where sagebrush grows. Found on open plains, high valleys, rocky mesas, mountainsides, but only in vicinity of sagebrush. Prime nesting habitat includes some lower wet areas where young can forage for insects. In very dry country, may fly several miles to a source of water in morning and evening.

uniqueness ofsage grouse

Sage Grouse birds will nest at ground level under sagebrush or under shrubs. When in spring, the male birds will gather and wag their pointed tails. These birds will also inflate a yellow air sac on their chest. Furthermore, it will also make distinctive sounds in the morning and evening to attract the attention of female birds. For female birds, they will then select which males are the most attractive based on them, after that they will be chosen to serve as their partners.

Platypus
The platypus is one of five extant species of monotremes, which are mammals that lay eggs and do not give birth to live young. Like other monotremes, it senses prey by means of electrolocation. The platypus is one of the few species of venomous mammals, in which the male platypus has spurs on the back of its legs capable of delivering venom, which can cause severe pain in humans. The unusual appearance of this egg-laying mammal, which has a duck-like bill, biwara tail, and beaver-like feet baffled European naturalists when they first discovered it, and the first scientists to examine the preserved body of a platypus (in 1799) judged it a fake, said it was made of several animals sewn together. The platypus' unique features make it an important subject in the study of biological evolution, and an easily recognized iconic symbol of Australia. The platypus is culturally significant to some Aboriginal Australian tribes, who also used to hunt this animal for food. The platypus appears as a mascot at national events and is featured on the back of the Australian twenty cent coin, the platypus is also the coat of arms of the state of New South Wales. Until the early 20th century, humans demanded platypuses for their skins, but today they are protected throughout their range. Although program captive breeding has had only limited success, and platypuses are vulnerable to the effects of pollution, they are not successful
