Seed potatoes had been chited prior to planting. Chited seed potatoes sowed in 3 rows 14" apart, 14" apart within rows, 4" deep. 1-2" compost added to top each bed after planting.
Beds had previously been prepped for planting. Surface debris and large stones were removed, and large weeds were pulled by hand. The bed was then broadforked, topdressed, and power harrowed, and flame-weeded.
After planted, the bed was watered well with a hose.
Safety precautions and correct manual handling were practiced when lifting and using tools.
Sown 22/3/21
Bed had previously been planted with Secale cereale green manure cover to prevent nutrient leaching, and to improve soil organic matter content when chopped and dropped. Secale cereale also has an alleopathic effect on the soil, and so will help to prevent weed growth. Bed will be followed on with buckwheat green manure to act as weed control with close planting density, prevent nutrient leaching, and improve soil om content.

Five rows pelleted seed direct sown into two outdoor bed using Jang seeder J24 plate. Prior to planting these, the ground was prepped. The plastic sheeting that had previously covered the bed was removed, any surface debris lifted, and large weeds were pulled by hand. The ground was broken up with a broadfork, 100L fresh compost was added, and topmix fertiliser added @ 50g/m2, and bed flame weeded and power harrowed prior to sowing. Both beds covered with climate netting after sowing to minimise pest damage. Radish seeds placed at ends of beds to help with weed control. Radish has a faster germination time than carrot, so beds can be flame weeded after radish seeds germinate as further weed control.
When placed, plants were watered well with a hose. Beds were then covered with protective netting to prevent damage from pests.
Safety precautions and correct manual handling techniques were practiced when using tools and lifting.

These plants are fed weekly with Vinasse organic liquid plant food, a byproduct of the sugar industry, diluted 1:100 in water. Vinasse is a natural N(4.5) -K(6) fertiliser.
On a weekly basis, side shoots of the plant are removed to encourage vertical growth, improve fruit quality, and make for easier harvesting. As plants grow taller, they are clipped onto the string hung alongside them for support.
Trusses are kept short by cutting them to ten fruits with secateurs, ensuring more consistently sized fruit.
Tomato plants consistently water to avoid fruit splitting.
Maintenance in instance photographed here carried out on 14/7/21.
When carrying out this maintenance, bed is also hand weeded.
