Then, choose one fraction and make sure the denominator is the same as the other fraction. You can do this in various ways but my favorite way is just to multiply both the fractions so that they have the same denominator. For example:

1/2     and    1/4

multiply the denominators 

2 x 4 

then you get 8 

then do a cross multiply thingy but i have no idea how to show it to you

and finally 1 / 8  and   4/8
