All they hear is DON'T DO this and DON'T DO that. Instead teachers and school administration should be demonstrating what they SHOULD DO. Students see and experience things that some of us could only dream about, on a daily basis. All of students experiences out side of school effect their behavior and mentality at school. 
The more we know about our students, the more we can connect to them. It is important to make connections and give students love and support they may not get anywhere else besides your classroom.

We used to believe that if a student acted out or didn't pay attention they were doing it out of spite. We thought that students only acted out to be mean and disrespectful so they were put in detention or suspended which just made the problem worse. When they know their teacher cares about them they feel more comfortable in the classroom with asking questions, getting help, or just talking about situations that might be going on in their life. This could change their whole outlook on school. Every student is able to have resiliency with a good teacher that encourages CBUPO (the feelings of Competence, Belonging, Usefulness, Potency, and Optimism)
