Micro-aggresions are the subtle responses we direct towards people based on our own biases and preconcieved ideas. They can be both verbal and non-verbal and are indirect responses to subconscious feelings we have towards a group of people or a person's identity. Being able to recognize micro-aggresions come with first analyzing with why certain things, behaviors and people make you uncomfortable. Analyzing where that started, how you feel it began, and then deconstructing those emotions into explanations/solutions to counter against those learned behaviors. Students with micro-aggresions are often using them in jest or in situations that seem harmless like exclusion, bullying, and verbal, non verbal cues. Having discussions about feelings, perceptions of our places in society, how we feel society treats us versus other people, are a great way to begin discussions to have students understand their own biases and begin action plans to dismantle them

It's emotionally exhausting to keep regurgitating information that seems common sense to white people who just seem to be deep seeded into their rooted, socially constructed ideas of race and social ladder. We know this is happening. It just doesn't directly affect certain people. It's quite frustrating when there is always a conversation of race being brought to the table by folks of color that seem to be dismissed.

Tolerance requires us to not just understand our experiences but to have emotional empathy for how our individual experiences differ.

Children born in poverty are disproportionately exposed from conception to delayed cognitive and emotional development. By age 5, 75% of your brain is matured. Early childhood experiences and lack of parental education contribute to these delays that result in many behavioral and cognitive delays that minority children- especially African-American, are predeisposed to. It is key to understand that a lot of these issues are due to environmental, genetic, and neurological factors that these students are exposed to at higher rates before 5. Understanding that these kids need higher emotional and behavioral regulation techniques than others and are neurologically hardwired to react in certain ways before proper pruning, it begins the development of empathy and active participation in dismantling systematic racism and prejudice.

To teach cultural sensitivity means to address ALL cultural opprsion and prejudice. From Easter. European to Narive American. Addressing how EVERYONE has had some form of cultural oppression means to discuss how sensitivity needs to be learned from ALL. Singling out certain people and ideas creates an uncomfortable environment. Discussing the oppression of everyone including intrapersonal cultural sensitivity is key to moving forward.

With the issue of Charlottesville, the president essentially condoned white supremacy. If our leader oks it, students see that and joke about it. Can you directly contradict that? Is ok to be honest, once again I’m afraid of pushing my beliefs of how wrong that is, is being forced on students. My biggest turn off as a catholic student was having my teachers opinion being forced on me. That led me away from faith for a long time.

You as a white male have the most privilege out of anyone in this world. You being able to access any space means you can dismantle those racial constructs in spaces people of color cannot. It starts by calling out those subtle microaggressions while analyzing yourself into your own cultural biases. Being an advocate is all people of color want and for you to understand that you can use your access and voice to help give power to those who have been stripped of it. We don't need a representative. We need an advocate who will voice that there needs to be change and actively do something about it. It starts with small internal and external conversations. Good luck

As a white man of privilege, I definitely agree with the idea that this conversation is a "slow drip." In high school, I would have been enraged at the idea of white privilege at all. However, because I fell in love with a black woman, I gained some skin in the game. With the proper motivation, I have been in a journey of expanding my heart and mind to understanding the backgrounds and legacies left to me as white and my wife as black and everyone around me. I can testify to the spiritual element of this as well--it has profoundly effected how I see Christ in others. So this should be something that everyone has skin in the game about, and we have to recognize that it will take a while. My two cents, for what it's worth.
