Raskolnikov's illness becomes worse and worse throughout the different chapters. It is difficult for him to meet new people or be out in public without fainting. His key character traits are starting to develop. Some of those traits being self-centered, intelligent, and simultaneously cruel and kind. In chapter 6, Raskolnikov has a nightmare that reflect his feelings of guilt and fear. The dream justifies his actions in the murder as being a "superman" like figure. The dream is best described by the following quote:

"The old woman was a mistake perhaps, but she's not the point! The old woman was merely a sickness...I was in a hurry to step over...it wasn't a human being killed, it was a principle! So I killed the principle, but I didn't step over, I stayed on this side...All I managed to do was kill. And I didn't even manage that, as it turns out..."

No more than the life of a louse, of a black-beetle, less in fact because the old woman is doing harm.
