This is shown when Johnny runs off with Pony without a second thought. He is so loyal to Ponyboy he is willing to kill Bob to protect him. Johnny is abandoned by his parents and relies on the gang for support. Pony describes this by saying  “Johnny Cade was last and least. If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you’ll have Johnny” (11).  In conclusion, Johnny both needs the gang for support and is very loyal to all of its members.

First, an event that shows this is when he sees the rings on Bob's hand and gets shaky and white even before they attack. After Johnny gets jumped it is show that he is scared when he says that “he would kill the next person who jumped him”( 34 ).Next, is when he cut Pony’s hair just because he was afraid to get caught.Finally, Pony describes Johnny as a boy with black eyes who jumps at his own shadow.  In conclusion, Johnny is terrified of getting caught or jumped to the point of him carrying a weapon.

This is shown many times in the book. Here are a few; First, when Johnny kills Bob, Dally gives him money and a gun because he wants to protect him. It is shown that the gang protects Johnny when Pony says “Johnny is the gang's pet, so Dally just couldn’t hit him”(25). One of the biggest times this is shown is when Dally kills himself when Johnny dies because he is all he had left. In conclusion, Johnny's struggles are the very things that protect him.

First, when Pony describes him at the end of the book by saying “a quiet, defeated-looking sixteen-year-old whose hair needed cutting badly and who had frightened expression on them”(186) which is almost the same as when he describes him in the beginning. Next, we learn a lot about Johnny over time, like the fact he can’t read or that he was jumped by Bob. Finally, Johnny company's Pony for most of the book showing that we learn a lot about him. Next, Johnny was loyal to the gang and meditators always chose one over arching cause Johnny’s was his friends. Finally, neuroticism is the tendency to experience negative emotions the test said he was high on this and it is shown in the book when he talks about his parents.
