He committed a form of betrayal and cheating in sake of power. Both Richard and John lied in order to protect their good name. They did not want to damage their social status and did everything they could to cover it up. She regrets everything she has done with this man. This can be seen as an connection with John Proctor and his affair with Elizabeth. Both Proctor and Underwood want to forget about their mistake and pretend that it never happened in the first place. Proctor similar to Underwood did not want the shame of others knowing about this sin. They did not want to be judged by their peers and loved ones. Another similarity is seen in importance of those they interacted with. As stated Carrie Underwood does not even remember the last name of the man. This lack of importance can be seen with Abigail Williams towards Proctor. John knows that Abigail will never be as important as Elizabeth, and Abigail has been shown this lack of importance as well. Elizabeth Proctor, married to John, has seen many obstacles throughout their marriage. At one point the couple was normal and a smooth machine. But after Proctors affair with youthful and flirtatious, Abigail Williams, their relationship now has iron walls between them. All throughout Act 2, Proctor was walking a fine line with his dear wife, Elizabeth. This act shows readers the lack of love and patience has towards his wife. But, this lack of love will be tested as Elizabeth is accused on witchcraft and is arrested. From this point on, John was determined to prove Elizabeth innocent. "I will bring you home. I will bring you soon... I will fall like an ocean on that court! Fear nothing Elizabeth", (Miller, pg. 204). This shows that Proctor will do anything to prove his wife's innocence and save her. This will result in John admitting his sins for Elizabeth, and saving her. This shows how he will stop at nothing to save his one love, Elizabeth. Through to The Crucible, John Proctor realizes that he has become the thing that he hates most, a hypocrite. He lost his 'goodness' and is burdened with self guilt from his committed adultery. He refuses to follow those he considers hypocrites, such as Reverend Parris, because he believes that they are not truly religious. They practice religion, but do not necessarily live by it. Proctor having an affair with Abigail makes him see himself as a hypocrite. He tries to work harder to become a better person, he demonstrates this by going to testify in court. It causes him to try to make things right and ultimately sacrifice himself for his wife to forgive for his sins. Goody Proctor understands and is aware of his internal struggle "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!"
