Theodore Roosevelt had an museum which opened its doors in 1867. One of its first specimens was a skull of a seal that washed up in New York Harbor. He had love for the environment and would pursue his interest for nature for the rest of his life. His museum kept on growing relentlessly along with his interest with the help of his son. His son "Teedie" collected everything in his reach and range of vision, he even payed other children to collect specimens for him. He did share his treasures with another museum co-founded by his father. The following year he traveled with his family to Egypt and Syria, where they collected numerous birds and had a skilled taxidermist skin and mount the birds himself. Although it sounded cruel and bloody, killing was the only way to make extremely accurate observations about physical characteristics on unfamiliar or foreign animals.

The "Teddy Bear" story began on a bear hunting trip near Onward, Mississippi November 14, 1902.He was invited by the governor of Mississippi, Andrew Longino. Unlike everyone else, Roosevelt was not able to spot a single bear. His assistant Holt Collier, a born slave and Confederate cavalryman, cornered and tied a bear to a willow tree to summon Theodore to shoot it. He refused to shoot the bear and sooner or later it became a big story and spread through newspaper articles all across the country. The newspaper articles called it "The President Who Refused to Shoot the Bear", but it was not just no ordinary president.. it was Theodore Roosevelt , the Big game hunter! It then became a political cartoon made by Clifford Berryman and posted in the Washington Post Nov. 16 1902. Michtom and his wife, Brooklyn candy shop owners and makers of stuffed animals had an idea to create a bear dedicated to Theodore, he called it "Teddy's Bear". Using the presidents permission to use his name the bear became so gained worldwide popularity and still has the origin to this day.

President Roosevelt inhereted an Empire-in-the-making when he assumed office in 1901. He wanted to increase the influence and prestige of the US on the world stage and make the country a global power. He also believed that the exportation of American values and ideals would have an ennobling effect on the world. He followed Mckinley in ending the relative isolationism that dominated the country since mid 1800's, often without support nor consent of congress, acting aggressively with foreign affairs.

Followed by the failure of a french construction team, the US commenced building a canal across a 50-mile stretch of the Panama isthmus during 1904. The world famous Panama Canal was transferred from the US to Panama 1999. The idea of creating the water passage was to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. At first the thought of making a passage across the mountainous seemed nearly impossible, but the idea remained tantalizing as a shortcut from Europe to Eastern Asia. With a push from Theodore Roosevelt the US purchased French assets in the canal zone for $40 million in 1902.

Before becoming the US president, Roosevelt was Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He resigned in 1898 to organize the first voluntary cavalry in the Spanish American War , the "Rough Riders". Theodore gathered a diverse group of cowboys, law enforcement officials, miners and Native Americans to form the Rough Riders. They were involved in the capture of Kettle Hill and charged across the valley to assist in the seize of San Juan Ridge, the Highest point of San Juan Hill which was the event they were best remembered for. A few days after that event the war ended and the US was victorious. Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders received the most publicity of any unit in the army during the war.
