as soon as we realized that i was doing a practical session with the rats i started to was my hands and then put on my overall. once i had finished putting my PPE (personal protective equipment)i started to think about the rats and their safety so i cleaned the table with anagene and a cloth so that there wasn't and bacteria on the table that could harm or make that rats ill. also you have to think about weather the last person cleaned everything correctly, its better to over clean it than not cleaning it and risking the animals safety . once i had cleaned the table i placed down a towel to help the rat grip on something so it isn't sliding all over the table. when i started to get the rat out of the handling cage, i let him sniff me to make sure that he was confident with me before just grabbing him. once the rat was out the cage and confident with me holding him me and my partner started to health check the rat to make sure everything was okay. the thing we checked for on the rat was his eyes, teeth, nose, ears, body, legs ,feet, claws and we also weighed the rat. as we was weighing the rat we had to place him into a tub so he would stay still so we could try and get an accurate weight. in my opinion weighing the rat was the most difficult part of the lesson because we had to make sure that the rat was safe inside that tub but also make sure that he was as still as possible because then the result was more accurate and that what we was trying to achieve the most. but also as i was watching to see what the scales came up with the rat was also trying his hardest to actually escape so keeping up with all them different situations was the hardest bit to achieve. whilst all this was happening the rats behaviour was extremely well and he was coming across with him being really confident with me, however i also think that my confidence towards the rat helped because i have have handled rats before and i like them so health checking and weighing them was a lot easier than i expected. the only thing i would change for next time is weighing them because lie i said i was confident but i know i could do better.
