"Charms" are found by pulling from the Right; Search, Share, Start, Devices, Settings. Settings is the charm used to find Power from there you may Shutdown, Restart, or Sleep.

Split Screen

Screen can be divided in half by pulling from the left just over half way and then gliding just a bit back to the right. When the blue screen appears release it. The dividing bar in the middle can be offset left or right by dragging it. To go back to full screen capture the center bar and drag either direction to the edge of the screen.

Customize your start screen

To make adjustments or customize your windows 8 tiles hold your finger on a tile and a menu will open along the bottom of your screen. Once this appears you can unpin, uninstall, re-size, and turn off a tile (not make it live on the screen with updates or a slideshow)

To customize your tiles/apps swipe bottom to to. A new screen will roll up and show all apps loaded on your device. Hold your finger on a app and the customize menu will appear at the bottom. You will be able to pin/unpin from start menu. For main programs you can pin to task bar, uninstall (use with caution), and more.

Screen shots can be taken by holding down the down volume and windows button at the same time. Your screenshots will save to the PC in "Pictures" and a folder titled "Screenshots" automatically.

Quick Access

Hold down the power button and the windows button at the same time to quickly access "lock" screen, "switch user", "sign out", "change password" and "task manager."

Task manager can also be accessed by holding the windows and power at the same time.

-Tapping = a left mouse click (select) Double tap to open

-Tap and hold = right click

-Pinching in = zoom out

-Pinching out (stretching) = zoom in

-Rotate use two fingers and turn

-Swiping is used for move, scroll, and arrange

-Swipe left to right to toggle through all the open programs.

-Swipe partially from left then back right to see all open apps/programs in a stacked format.

-Swipe bottom to to top in start menu to see all available apps/extras/options/menu. Swipe down to return to main start screen. See a slide below to learn how to personalize from these screens.

- Swipe top to bottom to close a program.

Organize and name your tile groups

The start window allows to you organize and group tiles and also to name/rename the grouping. To perform this function slide your finger from the top of the screen until the customize bar appears at the bottom. Drag and drop tiles into the desired groupings. Name/rename the groupings by tapping on the heading, then type your desired group name.

Personalize your start screen background

Access your charms from the start ment and choose "settings" then "personalize." Select a background option and adjust colors if you would like.

Personalize your lock screen

Access your charms choose "Settings" then "Change PC settings," "PC and Devices" then "lock screen." Some selected choices are there or you can browse and an additional image, or add a personal image.

Keyboard Function

The tablet keyboard will often open in it's own when tapping in an area where words are required. Otherwise access the keyboard on the desktop from the icon at the bottom or from the Settings charm.

To add a standard keyboard choose the settings charm, PC and Devices, Typing, then scroll down until you find "Add standard keyboard layout." To turn on slide bar to the right.

The keyboard also has a "writing" feature. Select this and use the stylus to hand write instead of typing. A great function for notes and meetings

Tips

- connect a word together by drawing an upside U over the letters

- slash through a letter or word to delete it.

- double tap a word and it will expand it you can then write over a letter.

Add Standard Keyboard

From Charms choose, Settings, Change PC Settings, PC and Devices, Typing. Next scroll down until you find add standard keyboard layout. To turn on, slide the square in the bar to the right.

Cloud Storage - OneDrive

Consider using Cloud storage. The district has been promoting the use of OneDrive. Once you create an account and access Office365 you will be able to store up to 20 GB

Transferring Files to OneDrive Using the New Tablets

1. Make sure you have created a Microsoft OneDrive account.

2. On the Desktop side of your tablet, click on the folder icon at the bottom of the screen

3. You will notice that you'll have your OneDrive (example shows SkyDrive) access from here as well as your My Documents folder that is now located under This PC- Documents.

4. Open up your Documents folder under This PC

(this should have all of the documents you have stored). You can click on any of these folders and drag them to the OneDrive location. Once you have your files saved here, you don't need them in your My Documents folder any longer unless you want to keep a hard copy/backup there as well.

As you edit files you will want to save them to the correct location within OneDrive. This will save the files to the cloud storage so you will have access to them anywhere by going to https://onedrive.live.com/. You won't need a flash drive to access files from anywhere any longer as long as you have an internet connection.

Create a Microsoft login but be careful to have two accounts. One for work and one for personal. If you already have a OneDrive account than this also doubles as your Microsoft account.

Picture Password

To create a picture password do a short swipe from the right on your tablet to show your Charms. Choose Settings then Change PC Settings, find Users or Personalize, scroll down to Sign-in Options, the choose Create a Picture Password and then follow the directions.

Saving Internet Shortcuts to your Desktop in Internet Explorer

2. Under Tools, select Create application shortcuts.

Book Mark or Favorite in Google Chrome

Bookmark or favorite a website will allow you quick access to that URL with one click. The bookmarks bar will place the site link directly on the line below the URL, choosing Other bookmarks will place it in a folder

1. While on the page you want to favorite tap or click the star at the end of the URL line.

2. A window will open. Keep or change the title line as suits your preference.

3. Choose where to show the URL link on either the "Bookmarks bar" or "Other bookmarks" folder.

4. Choose Done.

Personalize your Desktop

While on the desktop screen, touch the screen and hold a couple seconds. Release and then choose the "personalize" option at the bottom. You can choose a pre-loaded default screen theme or you may choose to get more themes online. Download and Open. It should automatically reset as your desktop.
