Exam Access Arrangements

Exam access arrangements (EAA) are adjustments to help you achieve your best in an assessment or exam. They are there to make things fair for everyone. It’s not cheating – it just means you get the support you need.

Exam Support

Arrangements from school are not automatically carried over to college so please inform your tutors of your needs.

Exam access arrangements can only be given if they are already part of how you usually work in a class.

Normal Way Of Working

A formal assessment process will need to be completed to confirm your exam access arrangements and these can only be done after your tutor completes a ‘Normal Way of Working’ form.

While we will always consider individual needs, we will not be able to accommodate every request.

Access Arrangements

Exam access arrangements may include:

Extra time
An alternative or separate room
A reader or reader pen

A prompter

Extra Time

If you are allocated extra time for an exam, it is usually 25% more than the standard exam time. For example, if the exam is 30 minutes long, you would get an extra 8 minutes – giving you a total of 38 minutes to complete it.

Please note that extra time is not guaranteed and may not be approved, even after the assessment process has been completed.

Alternative or Separate Room

If you are awarded an alternative or separate room, you may sit your exam in a room with a smaller group of candidates with similar needs.

Requests for an alternative or separate room during exams will require supporting evidence. In most cases, this must be medical evidence. A separate room is considered a last resort and will only be approved when clinical evidence is provided.

If you are allocated a smaller room for your exams, please be aware that it may still involve some level of disruption. This is due to the diverse needs of other learners in the room, who may have different access arrangements, medical conditions, or support requirements.

A Reader or Reader Pen

If you are eligible for a reader, this support may be provided by a trained person who reads the instructions and exam questions aloud to help with your understanding. They can repeat the question if requested.

If you are provided with a reader pen, it can be used to support you in reading questions and text during an exam. Please ensure the device is fully charged and the settings are correctly adjusted before the exam begins.

Scribe

If you have been allocated a scribe, they will write or type exactly what you dictate. They cannot help with your answers, but they can read back what they have recorded to ensure it is accurate.

Use of Computer

You may be eligible to use a computer to complete your exam. Your work will be saved to a USB stick and printed after the exam. Please note that spell check and internet access will be disabled throughout the exam period.

Prompt

A prompt may be allowed during your exam to help you maintain focus. They can give gentle reminders to stay on task and inform you of how much time has passed or how much remains.

Supervised Rest Breaks

If you have been awarded supervised rest breaks, you may take short breaks during the exam without losing time. Typically, a maximum of 30 minutes of rest time is allowed during any one exam sitting.

Any time taken for rest breaks will be added to the end of your exam. Start and finish times will be clearly written on the whiteboard. Please note that toilet breaks are not included as rest breaks unless supported by medical evidence.

During a rest break, you will not have access to your exam paper. It is a pause from the exam and must not be used as additional thinking or working time.
