I really liked that the entire choir was blended and the sound was fluid. This is something we definitely need to add to our performance of this piece because right now everything feels very disconnected and choppy. I'm a soprano so I also took note of the soprano's solo line that we have been having trouble with. The choir in the recording does a beautiful job with this line and now I understand the sound that we are looking to produce here.

I loved the balance of voices in the choir, every section was able to be heard but didn't overpower each other. Their dynamics were beautiful but their tempo caught my attention. To make the piece more interesting, they took the tempo and increased it at the parts when the song was reaching it's climax (when the sopranos entered in measure 40), and when the choir sang "Sacht", the tempo slowed down giving the song more depth. What we need to do is to add more depth into the piece and balance the voice parts.

When the swelling comes with the crescendo the sound is very pleasing in combination with the open vowels give a lovely sound (measure 69 to 70). We could definitely improve on our transitions between dynamics and our vowels to give a more confident feel. After improvements are made then we should come together as a whole as a choir.

We constantly sing the piece at one level when we should be thinking about the dynamic contrasts throughout the piece. I think that we need to have much more energy throughout the entire piece. Each note longer than one beat (one quarter note) should be sung with forward motion and energy. We should also work on the cut offs and shadow vowels. I think that if we work together and watch Mrs. Bennett's conducting we should easily be able to make those improvements (especially in dynamics).

Their use of dynamics was outstanding. Aside from the solo lines, the piece is a bit repetitive; so adding in extreme dynamics is much needed. It sounded so mature and each vowel was lined up perfectly. you can tell that each singer spun their air throughout the whole piece. I think we need to focus on understanding what "true" piano means; and how to achieve it. Dynamics are so important, and they truly make a piece.

So this is definitely something we need to incorporate into our performance. They also did a great job with using forward motion for the half notes. They also had a really good balance among all of the voice parts which I feel like is something we struggle with. Overall we need to have the controlled energy that they had.

I think that if we were to pay better attention to the dynamics that are written in the score, the piece would sound much more interesting and be way more fun to perform. I also liked this choir's pronounciation of the German words, and I think we need to do a better job at remembering how to pronounce these words.

Also, even in the quietest parts, they kept their energy up which made it sound really exciting even though it is a very slow, flowing song. They also had really good balance. I feel like we need to work most on staying piano/pianissimo when it is marked, because we tend to get loud too quickly and then just stay there. Paying attention to these dynamics will help us get the balance the recording has as well.

I enjoy the constant contrast in dynamics throughout the piece. Also, I really like how the tempo speeds up between measures 40-45 when the sopranos take the melody. Overall, the tempo is a lot faster than what we practice in Chorale. With contrast in dynamics and tempo, we can make this piece sound beautiful. Now that we have it pretty much learned, we have some time to experiment with those things.

Despite the parts not always being active simultaneously the choir in the recording sounds very together and we could work on that by paying more attention to the feel of the words and phrases rather than just the dynamics. Also since the tenor part is so high we could utilize the punch float technique and try to sound more legato.
