Notes/contributions:
In 1958, Zubir wrote the music and lyrics for “Majulah Singapura” as the official song of the City Council of Singapore, before he became a Singapore citizen in 1967. With a strong sense of patriotism towards Singapore, he refused to accept payment from the government for writing the song stating that the honour was rewarding enough for him.

“Majulah Singapura” was formally presented to the people of Singapore as the state national anthem on 3 December 1959, the day when Singapore’s first Malayan-born Yang di-Pertuan Negara (Malay for “Head of State”), Yusof bin Ishak, was inaugurated. It was a significant day for Zubir: Besides feeling the pride of being the anthem’s composer, he finally reconciled with his 101-year-old father who came from Indonesia to witness the occasion, after they were estranged for about 30 years.

Music compositions
A prolific songwriter, Zubir composed at least 1,500 songs during his lifetime. Some of his compositions are untraced, as he did not keep a record of all his works.

Zubir’s music can be divided into three categories: film songs, popular songs and national songs. Some of his best-known compositions include “Sayang di Sayang”, “Cempaka Biru”, “Setangkai Kembang Melati”, “Ikan Tembakul” and “Saputangan”.

On 22 August 2007, Zubir’s family signed an agreement with record company Universal Music Publishing Group to manage 1,500 songs written by Zubir. Under the agreement, Zubir’s works can be recorded by contemporary artistes, used in commercials and made available as mobile downloads.

Coolies (labourers) manually unloaded cargo from the tongkangs and twakows (boats) and moved them to the godowns for storage and distribution.6 The shophouses were two to three stories high and typically had coolies and working class families living on the upper floors, while the ground floor units were used for shops and trading offices.

Source 1: Clarke Quay is named after Sir Andrew Clarke, Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1824 to 1902.

Notes/contributions:
Sophia Blackmore (born in 18 October 1857, Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia–d. 3 July 1945, Australia) was the first woman missionary sent by the Methodist Women's Foreign Missionary Society to work in Singapore. During her stay in Singapore from 1887 to 1928, she helped to found two Methodist schools for girls. Methodist Girls’ School and Fairfield Methodist Girls’ School. She also set up a boarding home for girls, supported the early Methodist Straits Chinese Christian work, and published a Christian periodical in Baba Malay.
Upon her arrival in Singapore on 16 July 1887, Blackmore was encouraged by the work of Reverend Oldham and his wife, which included the local Methodist Episcopal Church and the Anglo-Chinese School at Coleman Road. Within a month, Blackmore had opened a school for Tamil girls on 15 August 1887, with the support of Oldham, several members of the Indian community and a teacher named Alexander Hagedorn (Mrs Alexander Fox). Known originally as the Tamil Girls' School, it was later renamed Methodist Girls' School.

Blackmore’s frequent visit to homes by horse-carriage within estates bounded by Telok Ayer and Neil Road led to the establishment of a second school for girls. Tan Keong Saik, along with other influential Chinese families, had persuaded her to teach their daughters – an uncommon request as education for girls was not a priority among the Chinese then. A widow, Nonya Boon, later offered Blackmore her home at Cross Street to start a school for girls.11

With just eight girls, the Telok Ayer Chinese Girls' School began lessons in August 1888. Under the leadership of Emma Ferris, who was the principal from 1892 to 1894, the school grew and eventually became the Fairfield Girls' School in 1912 upon its move to Neil Road. In 1983, the school went co-educational with its relocation to Dover Road and was renamed Fairfield Methodist Secondary School.14

Entrusted with the care of a young girl when she arrived in Singapore, Blackmore realised the need for a home for girls. Thus on 1 May 1890, a boarding home was set up for girls. First located at Sophia Road, the home moved several times along locations up the hill until its move to a bungalow at No. 6 Mount Sophia. The house stood at the pinnacle of the hillock with a bird's eye view of the city. It was known initially as the Deaconess Home because it also housed many single lady missionaries and teachers. It is now more familiarly known as Nind Home (1912) after American missionary, Mary C. Nind.16 The home served as a residence for school-going girls, mui tsai (Cantonese term for young Chinese female servants), abandoned girls and orphans. Blackmore's girls, as they became known, were nurtured in the Christian faith, and became suitable brides for Christian boys from similar homes in Malacca and Singapore.

Posthumously, Sophia Blackmore was inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame, which was launched by the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) on 14 March 2014. She was honoured for her contributions to the development and progress of Singapore.

In 1819, at age 21, Tan left Malacca and came to Singapore.6 The enterprising young man started out as a vegetable seller, bringing produce from the countryside to sell in the city. By 1827, he had saved up enough money to open a shop along the riverside at Boat Quay.7

Businessman
Through a joint business venture in land speculation with J. The building was designed by government surveyor J. T. Thomson. Although it was completed at the end of 1846, the building was operated as a hospital only from 1849 onwards, as the government had used it as a temporary convict jail.13 Tan also founded the Thian Hock Keng Temple at Telok Ayer Street, Singapore’s oldest temple and the centre of worship for the Hokkien community.14

Tan was the first Asian to be made Justice of the Peace by then Governor William J.

Notes/contributions:
Singapore has an extremely rich history. Despite being a small and young island, we have an really interesting past. A past that even some Singaporeans may be unaware of. With the recent passing of Chinese New Year, Chinatown has come under the spotlight with its new year decorations and bustle of activity as people buy snacks and clothes for the festivities.

Singapore actually has two Chinatowns. A fact that even most Singaporeans don’t know. The official Chinatown is the well-known place by the Singapore River which is featured prominently in tourist brochures and travel agencies.

When Stamford Raffles first came to Singapore in 1819, he set up a trading settlement. He then left Singapore under British command. A couple of years later, in 1822, he returned to Singapore and set up a system where the city would be segregated by the four ethnicities.

From the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum, take a short jaunt down South Bridge Road, and keep an eye out for Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. While the statue of this temple’s patron deity is only unveiled on special occasions, the temple’s interior is a wealth of murals and shrines, dedicated to gods like Shiva and Durga.

Your journey into Singapore’s religious traditions begins at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum. The temple’s interior is architecturally designed in the form of a mandala, a central concept in Buddhist and Hindu spirituality that represents universal connection. Hunt around the compound, and you’ll find hidden gems like a rooftop garden adorned with a beautiful pagoda and a food court selling vegetarian cuisine.

Lovers of culture looking to immerse themselves in Singapore’s rich, multi-ethnic culture will find no better place than Chinatown. This beautiful district is the only Chinatown in the world to boast a Buddhist temple, mosque and Hindu temple along a single street.Your journey into Singapore’s religious traditions begins at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum.

Once an enclave for Singapore’s Chinese immigrant population, the Chinatown of today is a beloved blend of old and new, with historic temples and medicinal halls sitting alongside award-winning bars and restaurants. You’ll be able to spend an entire day exploring this vibrant district, which encompasses the neighbourhoods of Tanjong Pagar, Bukit Pasoh, Kreta Ayer and Telok Ayer.

Encompassing Kreta Ayer, Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Pasoh, Chinatown’s four sub-districts each possess their own unique charms. While Chinatown’s size might seem daunting for the first-time visitor, this comprehensive guide will ensure you don’t miss out any of its star attractions.

Singapore actually has two Chinatowns.
